This guy has no idea what is meant by "green," does he.

I was on a uni hiring committee where my older, white male colleague got almost teary eyed about a white male candidate who was from the same home town. He clearly saw himself in this candidate and pushed like crazy to hire him. This is how bias happens, unless we make efforts to intervene.

That is just as offensive as making negative claims against women or people of color based on zero information.

I was about to say something about how these old guys need to get off the stage but I looked it up and he and I are almost exactly the same age. The difference between us is that I know a Democratic senator's job is to scream loud and often about Trump's evil.

But I can remember homelessness "crises" as well in the 19802 and 1990s and cities that didn't get busloads of migrants also have increased homeless numbers -- so clearly not the only, or maybe even the primary cause?

Or a college or grad student, to be honest.

I just remember being lectured about the environmental evils of nuclear power by chain smoking European friends

Yes and when they talk about how working class households could afford a house take a look at those homes in Flint to see the house they could afford.

A sentence that includes “law professor” and “convict in a court of public opinion” has my head spinning.

I don't think you will find many people who are working hard to defend Clinton. This is only an issue because Trump thinks he can deflect from his own culpability by focusing on Clinton

I myself have smoked on an airplane I guiltily admit
December 20, 2025 at 4:30 PM
When I lived in Berlin, where smoking restrictions came later than in the US, when I came home from any outing I'd hang all my clothing on the balcony in hopes of losing some of the smell.

I used to included all the stuff to get a course approved, then dropped anything inessential. Now our state requires us to post syllabi so they can search and kill the “woke,” I worry that omitting the boilerplate stuff could give them a reason to target some of my classes, so the pages are back.
December 20, 2025 at 4:15 PM
You mean in that not a single Dem other than Clinton himself cares if Bill goes down in flames?
December 20, 2025 at 4:10 PM
I blame universities now requiring many many pages of legalese as part of the syllabus. 20 years ago my syllabi were 2-3 pages long and just said what the course policies, assignments and readings were. Students read it because it was easy to read.

My one concession is to check profiles, because tone and intention can be hard to pick up here (e.g. sarcasm). If the profile is of someone I don’t think I need in my life, I will block. Muting also gets them off my timeline.

I think that is very unfair. Resistance is happening everywhere and every day. I'd like it to be greater but how insulting to people who are protesting in a variety of ways every day to say everyone is a coward
December 19, 2025 at 5:36 PM
The folks in places like Minn, Chicago and LA who are tracking ICE and protecting neighbors daily are heroes and should get more attention and credit.
December 19, 2025 at 4:08 PM
there are a lot of protests, but it's exhausting. Trump's genius is being so chaotic that there are outrages every day, it's difficult to keep up such a level of vigilance and still get to work each morning.

I teach about equity in planning, and when I retire next year, I will either 1. Not be replaced at all, or 2. Be replaced by someone with a very different set of research interest and skills.

My red state uni has insisted it was in financial crisis during the Great Recession (ok, makes sense) but has never come out of that austerity mindset. Except of course the new School of something with cyber and ai in the title. We are all supposed to show how we align with its mission.

I always read because some students write thoughtful comments, but there are usually a few that are off the wall. I’ve been getting more student complaints that I offer critical feedback on their work, e.g. “teaching,” for some the point of my review of assignments is simply getting praise.
December 19, 2025 at 3:11 PM
It’s a bit like student admissions to the top 10 schools. With 100 qualified kids for every slot, you are going to pick 1 and the other 99 will either blame themselves, blame others, or recognize that its random make peace with the other available choices.

And also if you manage to project “asshole” on a job interview, when you are presumably on best behavior, then that’s a you problem!
December 19, 2025 at 2:30 PM
I’ll bet we could find a way to balance these competing concerns!
