The trial ended in an acquittal. But the proceedings felt like a strange sort of performance art—highly amusing and highly menacing at the same time.

Thoughtful perspective here, worth thinking about along with J Sotomayor’s dissent. I’m also thinking about how those 6 railed against colleges even barely considering race as a factor in admissions, but they’re fine with race-conscious seizures. #law

I support what 50501 says on this thread, & add that I live in #DC without a car so walk or take public transit everywhere. This is a beautiful and safe city. DC could do better on some public safety issues, but militarization/ federalization is not the way.
@50501dc.bsky.social on Bluesky
This morning, President Trump declared a “public safety emergency” in Washington, DC and deployed the National Guard onto our streets. This is NOT safety. It is an unconstitutional power grab that threatens the rights of DC residents. @50501movement.bsky.social

Congress has given the President the power to take control of the D.C. local police for up to 30 days "for federal purposes," and to deploy the (tiny) D.C. National Guard.

As today's "One First" explains, that's the full extent of what the President can do to "federalize" D.C. without new statutes:
172. "Federalizing" D.C.
Like any federal enclave, the federal government has plenary power over the District of Columbia. But Congress has delegated most of that power to local officials; it would take new laws to undo that.

164. Justice Kagan's D.V.D. Concurrence
Thursday's denouement in the third-country removals case was not surprising. But the split between Justice Kagan and Justices Sotomayor and Jackson highlights a deeper (and July 4-appropriate) debate.

Just out of the #scotus courtroom. Horrible. Especially the school curriculum case. Universal injunctions decision is symbolically bad & wrong, but can be lawyered around. Public schools are screwed and will soon spend their funding on litigation should they dare to expose kids to new ideas. #law
