The Gestapo was a secret police force. No warrants. No courts. No lawyers. And no appeals. People vanished in the night, not because they broke the law, but because the law no longer meant anything. The knock on the door was the sentence. ICE isn’t that. Not even close. ICE is a public agency enforcing laws passed by elected officials. Its agents file reports. They seek warrants. They lose cases. Judges stop them. Lawyers challenge them. Some detainees go home. That’s not tyranny. That’s bureaucracy, for better and worse. You can hate immigration policy. You can argue enforcement is too harsh, too sloppy, or too broad. You can work to have the law changed if you wish. That’s a republic doing what it’s supposed to do. But when you call ordinary law enforcement “the Gestapo,” you cheapen real evil. You turn history into a slogan and suffering into a metaphor. And once every badge is tyranny, no tyranny is left to recognize. In Mississippi, I was raised to believe words should earn their weight. This one hasn't yet. It throws around the language of dictatorship while living under a system where courts still rule, lawyers still argue, and the government still loses. That difference matters. Because the day enforcement becomes secret, unchecked, and answerable to no one, we won’t need to borrow names from history. We’ll know exactly what we’re dealing with. And we’ll wish we’d kept our words honest.”

In a world where dating apps offer endless options and relationship labels continue to evolve, the question of whether humans are naturally monogamous feels more relevant than ever. Alina, a Romanian living in London, found herself wondering the same thing after exploring polyamory – the practice of having multiple intimate relationships with the full knowledge and consent of all parties involved. "I recently met someone who is poly and has always been that way," she explains. "I just wanted to know: why did we settle on monogamy as a society?" One way to understand our evolutionary path is by studying our closest primate relatives and their reproductive strategies. "Gorillas are polygynous – one male mates with multiple females," says Dr Kit Opie, an evolutionary biologist at the University of Bristol in the UK. "So, the offspring within the group are all fathered by the male but mothered by the different females within the group." "It's when a male gorilla kills baby gorillas that he is not related to, so that their mother will become fertile more quickly and he can then mate with them. Probably not an evolutionary strategy we'd want to emulate." But among other apes more closely related to humans - like chimpanzees and bonobos - the females developed a different evolutionary tactic. Females mate with multiple males, confusing paternity and reducing the likelihood of their offspring being harmed. Humans likely began with a similar system: multi-male, multi-female mating groups. But around two million years ago, things changed. "The reason for it was climate change," says Dr Opie. "In sub-Saharan Africa, where our ancestors lived, there was a drying and large parts became savannah. Early humans needed to be in large groups to protect themselves from huge numbers of predators. Brains got larger to deal with these large complex groups and therefore the lactation period had to extend." But with too many males in large groups, it became harder to confuse paternity. "Also, the females needed the help from one of those males to bring up their offspring. So, they switched to monogamy." According to Dr Opie, this shift was necessary not because monogamy was "better" but because it was the only viable option. Raising large-brained, slow-developing human infants required enormous parental investment, more than a mother could typically manage on her own. But although research suggests that early humans did evolve to be monogamous, people who choose monogamy often struggle to remain faithful to one partner. "There are species that stick with a single partner through the whole of their life, and they don't cheat, but they are quite rare," says Dr Opie. "Our closest relatives that are monogamous are the gibbons. But gibbons are separated off from other pairs and it's probably easier for both the male and the female to kind of police who's coming into their little patch of the rainforest and who isn't." "But when you're in a large multi-male, multi-female group like humans are, it's much more difficult to police that, to see whether your partner is cheating or not." Monogamy, in this light, is less a natural default and more a survival strategy - one that came with built-in flaws. So, what happens in our brains when we fall in love or struggle to stay faithful? Sarah Blumenthal, a neuroscience PhD student at Emory University in the US, studies prairie voles - small, furry creatures known for forming long-term pair bonds, similar to humans. Unlike their non-monogamous vole cousins, prairie voles have high levels of oxytocin receptors in the brain's reward centres. Oxytocin - often called the "cuddle hormone" – is a neurochemical released in the brain during physical touch and bonding moments. "If we experimentally mess up the oxytocin signalling in prairie voles, they are not able to form strong bonds, they spend less time around their partner," says Blumenthal. Humans have similar oxytocin systems, suggesting that our brains are built to experience bonding as rewarding. But another chemical – dopamine – may explain shifts in our desire for novelty versus commitment. During the early stages of bonding, dopamine floods the brain, driving attraction and openness. Once a bond is established, dopamine patterns change. Despite the evolutionary argument for monogamy, human cultures have always displayed a wide array of relationship arrangements. Anthropologist Dr Katie Starkweather of the University of Illinois Chicago in the US has documented over 50 instances of polyandry - where a woman has multiple husbands - across the globe, from Nepal and Tibet in Asia to parts of Africa and the Americas. While polyandry is statistically rarer than polygyny (one man with multiple wives), Starkweather cautions against viewing it as implausible. "Women can benefit economically from having multiple partners. If your primary husband dies or he has to be absent for very long periods of time - like was the case in some native North American groups - it really behoved you to have a backup plan," she says. In some cases, non-monogamous arrangements provided genetic advantages as well.
