Worth mentioning the great scene in Dracula A.D. 1972, when Peter Cushing as Van Helsing fills an ashtray with butts as he struggles to figure out the connection between Alucard and Dracula.
A picture of desktop, with a hand holding a diagram created from two words - “DRACULA” along the top, “ALUCARD” along the bottom. A line connects each letter in DRACULA to its corresponding letter in ALUCARD.

Good to see Poe discourse picking up.

Current reading: Daniel Hoffman Poe (x7). It’s a mix of biography, criticism, and personal account of coming to terms with Poe’s literary aesthetic from a former U.S. Poet Laureate.
Paperback cover of Daniel Hoffman’s Poe Poe Poe Poe Poe Poe Poe. Caricature of Poe in 19th century garb (cravat, dark topcoat, etc) holding a quill pen. He has a third eye in the center of his forehead.

Through a miracle - or just a venue getting creative with audience dispersement when the seating distro got uneven - I went to see Air with a ticket in nosebleed seats, and ended up in the pit, right in front of the stage.

Which is nice.

Air (the band) playing live. Jean-Benoît Dunckel-Barbier is positioned between two standing keyboards, and he is playing both. Nicolas Godin faces toward him, and he is playing acoustic guitar. Their outfits are white. The backdrop is dark with bright lights reflecting to give a starry impression.

This marvelous movie is showing @musicboxtheatre.bsky.social less than 2 hours from now! (I can’t go because Cubs. But you should! Laughton is unforgettable!)

"Are we not men?"

Island of Lost Souls (1932), from H. G. Wells's The Island of Dr. Moreau, is deeply unsettling, especially as it toys with unknowing bestiality. Plus you get Charles Laughton really going for it (even for him).

And Bela. ❤️

I’m psyched for this one!

Just a reminder that Charlie Kirk is well documented expressing racist views, and being able to say so openly is normal and healthy. Also it’s the job of journalists to report facts regardless of whether or not the stating of such facts makes one group uncomfortable.

*A Republican lawmaker objected to reference to Charlie Kirk holding “often racist and controversial views” in local Alaska news
*The corporate owner took down the story and edited it
*The journalists resigned

This feels like more and more of our media now.

#2…

“Mr. Poe, your submission, The Tell-Tale Heart,” is very gripping, I’d like to discuss the narrator.”

Oh… the title track: forgot to mention the motorcycle. Horns, Hammond organ, guitar solo, choir, some sort of chant, motorcycle… am I forgetting anything else?
pseigh.bsky.social
Maybe lacking a solid central theme, but there’s enough good stuff to engage one’s interest.

Alan’s Psychedelic Breakfast drifts a bit, if there’s weakness, that’s where it is. The title track throws everything at the wall - horns, Hammond organ, guitar solo, chant… it works though! The three five-minute songs are solid.

Atom Heart Mother is pretty good overall.
Freedom of Speech, 1943, Norman Rockwell, oil on canvas. The blue-collar speaker wears a plaid shirt and suede jacket, with dirty hands and a darker complexion than others in attendance.[15] The other attendees are wearing white shirts, ties and jackets.[16] One of the men in the painting is holding a document that reveals a subject of the meeting as "a discussion of the town's annual report".[5] Edgerton's youth and workmanlike hands are fashioned with a worn and stained jacket, while the other attendees appear to be older and more neatly and formally dressed. According to Bruce Cole of The Wall Street Journal, Edgerton is shown "standing tall, his mouth open, his shining eyes transfixed, he speaks his mind, untrammeled and unafraid", and his face resembles Abraham Lincoln.[5] According to Robert Scholes, the work shows audience members in rapt attention with admiration of the speaker, who resembles a Gary Cooper or Jimmy Stewart character in a Frank Capra film.[17] According to John Updike, the work is painted without any painterly brushwork.[18]
