Lovely sprite work from the PS1 game, X2: No Relief. Recently revisited this and definitely think it’s underappreciated, mainly because I think it only saw a European release. Kickass techno OST as well, representative of the mid 90s.

What I absolutely loved about Final Fantasy XIII is how hard the logo hits after you finish the game (not a spoiler without context but the logo is essentially a depiction of the game’s finale!)

Aaaand finally finished FFXIII. Holds up brilliantly even after all these years! Didn’t find the linearity of it as bothersome as people made it to be. Definitely interested in checking out XIII-2 and XIII-3; here’s hoping SE releases remastered versions on PS5 at some point.

Finally completed Death Stranding 2 yesterday evening. What a fantastic journey and what an emotional ending to the story. One full of hope for humanity and the importance of persevering against all odds, including those imposed to us by the universe. #deathstranding2 @kojipro2015.bsky.social

Probably the best snow I’ve seen in a game. Small details like the little specks of sunlight reflecting of the snow surface are exactly the kind of details I would expect from a @hideokojimaen.bsky.kojimaproductions.jp game.

Fun fact (and spoiler warning for the photo!), the review had two full pages spoiling the entire game. I’m fairly confident nowadays no publisher would allow that 😅

A couple of months later, the game would see its full European release and later in the Fall the Special Missions disc became available, with a ton of extra VR missions and a segment with a fully playable Gray Fox. Special Missions was essentially an expansion pack and it required the original game.

Otherwise, the review had some great screenshots of the game and a nice overview of the cast.

In this same issue, the game was also reviewed - receiving a 10/10 - and described as a genre-defining masterpiece. No game up until this point demonstrated the cinematic quality that MGS did.

Months later, the Official UK PSM had a special issue with its now iconic cover of Yoji Shinkawa’s cyborg ninja and a lengthier demo of MGS1, now with full English voice acting.
August 23, 2025 at 5:35 PM
The demo was essentially based on the one demonstrated at E3 and still had the Japanese voice track although with English subtitles

(Part 2 of the MGS 1-3 magazine retrospective)

After E3 1998, the hype for MGS1 was unreal. Although many folks remember the MGS2 demo bundled with Z.O.E, there was actually a demo of MGS1 available with ISS PRO ‘98 (at least in Europe) that September.

The issue also had an interesting interview with Hideo, which I’m providing in its entirety in the screenshots.

He highlights that they were able to push boundaries in game design simply because the team was…inexperienced!

The MGS1 E3 demo was hugely popular, featuring for the first time cutscenes rendered fully in-engine. Earlier demos had CGI cutscenes and it was the original direction Hideo was following. The realtime graphics though were shaping up nicely so the team made the shift to a more seamless presentation.

Arguably, this issue kicked the MGS hype into full gear with the coverage of the E3 1998 presentation - a fully playable demo that was slightly updated from the TGS demo shown earlier in the year. It was unanimously the game of the show and it even got Shigeru Miyamoto to play it.

Over the next weeks, I’ll be posting insights into the Metal Gear series from key Official PlayStation Magazine issues (UK).

Starting with the August 1998 issue, and its gorgeous front and back covers.

Playing around with the Sony Trinitron KV-20FV10 I recently received. This set is in excellent condition (Grandia on PS1 shown in S-video, no RGB on this set unfortunately) but will definitely enjoy this one! @crtpixels.bsky.social @dark1x.bsky.social

A much needed appreciation post for Gitaroo Man - I feel like this game doesn’t get enough credit for its kickass soundtrack. #playstation #psp #gitaroomanlives

Still making my way through FFXIII. Great game overall, but consistent with what I recall reading back in 2009/2010, the experience gets sooo much better in the later chapters! Hope #SquareEnix will eventually remaster the trilogy. #playstation #finalfantasy

Rolled credits on Cocoon. Brilliant puzzle game with one of the most unique concepts I’ve seen in years. Can’t imagine how much time the developers must have spent creating these puzzles. #playstation #cocoon @carlsengames.bsky.social
