"We took freedom of speech away" should be in every campaign ad moving forward.

Trump: "We took the freedom of speech away because that's been through the courts and the courts said you have freedom of speech, but what has happened is when they burn a flag it agitates and irritates crowds."

There was certainly something recently which monopolised all public debate and paralysed all policy initiative in the UK for the better part of a decade, and I dont think it was trans rights.

"While Britain was redefining what a woman is, China was building five nuclear reactors," says Kemi Badenoch.

I cannot be the only person curious about how these two things are related

The whole piece is just hackneyed bigotry which doesn't stand up to scrutiny, only someone with no experience of dealing with the HO could claim 'the governing class insists on uncontrolled immigration', as if Windrush never happened. Likewise the assertion that only certain minorities practice VAWG

Yes, as was pointed out in the US context and we're seeing the effects of this as repressive policies have been scaled up
pswidlicki.bsky.social
I agree on this point, you can see it in the way she just copy and pastes stuff from the US without bothering to customise it for the UK context first which she absolutely could do while maintaining the core essence

A while back, somone (@jonnelledge.bsky.social maybe?) listed some of the reasons asylum seekers win on appeal and it's like 'HO official confused two different African countries'

Citizens and long-term legal residents. Windrush on crack

Just noticed the Conservatives’ British ICE proposal also involves using mass deployment of facial ID – still an unproven and unreliable technology that particularly struggles with non-white faces – to enable deportations.

Which would inevitably mean false positives leading to detention of citizens

My estimations of the current Tory leadership were already pretty low but I did think they might baulk at this kind of stuff - this is just one example of the kind of stuff I've seen on my TL every day for past 9 months

Jesus Christ. DHS has held this guy in the hospital handcuffed to a bed and under constant guard for over a MONTH without ANY warrant or even ANY steps taken towards putting him into the removal system!
Petitioner’s counsel has requested documentation of a judicial warrant for his arrest, any charging documents, or other authority supporting his detention. See Santiago Decl. ¶¶ 18–20. ICE has provided no response. Id. To date, ICE has not placed Petitioner in removal proceedings, charged him with violating immigration law, set bond, issued a Notice to Appear, or otherwise processed him. See Pet. ¶¶ 16, 49. In Respondent’s Opposition brief, the government states “ICE intends to take further action consistent with the laws prescribed under the Immigration and Nationality Act (“INA”) once Petitioner is released from medical care and it can conduct the examination as [prescribed] in 8 C.F.R § 287.3.” Opp. at 4. Neither Petitioner nor Respondents have provided the Court with information about Petitioner’s citizenship, whether he has violated any law or regulation, or any information that would suggest that Petitioner is a flight risk.

Just not sure, really not sure, that I'd follow Kemi Badenoch as an example of the USA as a country that is protecting human rights without being in the ECHR.
pswidlicki.bsky.social
I'd say we've already had that, people have been shot and killed by ICE, but I take the wider point about greater public awareness. I would also add that it wasn't that long ago that it was broadly accepted that the 'hostile environment' had resulted in grave injustices to the Windrush generation

There are some in the Tory party whose priority appears to be making sure that the corpse is at least nicely turned out for the occasion

No but seriously, it's fucking wild that this is happening now, and it's having as little an effect on Democratic priorities or ideology or rhetoric as it has, thus far anyways.

One of the things linking a lot of bad electoral behaviour takes right now is a massive overstatement of the extent to which voters vote based on 'values'. It's not that they don't at all, but it's so much more nuanced than is being made out, and is often subsidiary to valence/competence questions.

Most morally offensive part of hegseth's speech was the idea that manliness and courage consists of bullying and abusing people weaker than you rather than standing up for justice against people more powerful than you. Real andrew tate shit

Can't speak for Ed Davey, but personally I find the insinuation that the current government has anything resembling a vision more offensive than the 'fat bloke' comments

Nothing to worry about, just masked, unidentified government agents grabbing people off the street whom they see as subhuman. The person whose detention is described in this article was authorized to work and was deported anyway, taking him away from his wife and children who are US citizens.

I've just ended up cooking lot more, the same money goes a lot further on ingredients, but yeah feels like something is lost in terms of the wider experience
