A new detailed study confirms that the Hunga-Tonga eruption in 2022 had a net cooling effect of 0.1ºC on the Southern Hemisphere. The sulphate aerosols overwhelmed the water vapour effect in the upper atmosphere.

The January 2022 Hunga eruption cooled the southern hemisphere in 2022 and 2023 - Communications Earth & Environment
The 2022 Hunga volcanic eruption resulted in radiative energy losses in the Southern Hemisphere following the eruption, causing a cooling of −0.10 ± 0.02 K at the end of 2022 and 2023 there, according...

The 2024-2025 polar vortex season is wrapping up with an interesting "final stratospheric warming" event. Read more on the NOAA climate.gov blog today!

An early but interesting end to the 2024-25 polar vortex season
After spending much of the season with super strong wind speeds, the polar vortex bowed out two weeks ago, with the core west-to-east winds sliding off the pole. However, as it winds down for the seas...

The polar vortex will really be torn apart.

The ensemble-mean zonal wind at 60°N and 10 hPa (U1060) in the latest ECMWF forecast drops below -25 m/s in late March.

GFS 00z is even more aggressive, predicting U1060 to reach -35 m/s, with strong high pressure replacing the polar vortex.
