I have the biggest grin on my face right now.

There's probably two since I think the printed works (Lotus Eaters/Foul Detective Satori) are done by different teams.

I think it plays a part.

It was definitely a complaint floating around on tumblr during the 2013-2015 with regards to the Ten Desires specifically.

How much this is true now, I'm unsure since we do have at least one active Touhou Scanlation team.

This joke is funny to like me and the handful of people that listened to me talk about a very specific folktale.

This is all just theory though, I don't have any real proof and I've only seen bits and pieces of it from fandoms outside my wheelhouse that I see in passing.

It's a little hard to needle and thread everything together, but I think there's something connection between the general lack of engagement in fandoms and the consequence of that is a drop off in fandom events that encourage community engagement.

And I think, lately, there are more people loudly complaining about that works not suiting their tastes. There's an unintended consequence of discouraging others to share their works, which could include creatives that might share similar visions.

I skipped a step: I think there are people that are generally a little too...picky with what they want to see, so I think that also drives the engagement down a bit, too.

I do feel like this problem is just tied to a larger problem about how the unspoken rules fandom etiquette was never passed on to the influx of newcomers that joined during the start of the pandemic.

I feel like to some degree, people aren't willing to try 'cause they feel inadequate.
December 9, 2025 at 5:18 PM
I think a while back I saw an IchiFuto event and I saw a handful of names that also participated in the Futojiko anthology collaboration.

I just kinda wish in general the fandom environment just generally encourage people to engage and participate.

But I think even memes do have some thought put into it.

Though maybe I'm an outlier in that regard.

(Squeezing a very specific Mononobe no Moriya lore in my recent Futo doodles)

I think part of it is because it's such a large series with a lot of depth and I think in order to really engage with Touhou, you really do need to be familiar with history and myth. Which, I do admit is a tall order.

I feel like another problem right now is genAI and needing moderators that can catch that. I think most Big Bangs take place over the course of a month or two, which is a very big commitment compared to something like a Secret Santa.
December 9, 2025 at 5:13 PM
The other problem is requiring an even number of writers and artists, either that or recruiting enough people that are flexible enough to take either role if there's a split...

I think printing in Japan is much more accessible than in the US.
