Hi friends! Here's more context about what Scriddle is, what I'm trying to do with it and what I'd like to do next after I send the last one.
What is Scriddle? Scriddle is an experimental daily puzzly game. The player’s goal is to solve a puzzle in the style of the ones found in the Nikoli magazine, without being told its rules. To solve a Scriddle, you have to submit guesses and use the game’s feedback to deduce its specific ruleset. Scriddle was initially planned to run only during December 2025, for a private group of playtesters that signed up for it. My goal was to gather feedback and see if that game concept had any potential. Each puzzle is selected from the puzz.link database, a public collection of puzzles in many pre-existing genres. Their authors did not design them with Scriddle in mind, which is why the game may be unbalanced at times. These puzzles in their original rulesets belong to their own designers and, of course, I don’t take credit for them. Sharing Scriddle Working on the first Scriddle prototype took me a bit longer than I expected, and I started sending them out to private playtesters a week later than I wanted. Players really wanted to play a month worth of puzzles though, so I decided to extend it to the first week of January. Several players also wanted to compare their scores with friends, so I decided to share those last 8 Scriddles publicly, to gather a bit more feedback before the end. I think I took that decision too hastily, as Scriddle as it is was not really ready for a public-facing release. For example, the source of the original puzzle was only shown when you solved the puzzle. I tried to keep minimal information on the welcome screen, so the first playtesters wouldn’t get confused and spoil themselves accidentally. For a public game however, you ideally want the source of the original puzzle to be seen at all times, not just at the end of the puzzle. I’m sorry for the confusion! I did my best to correct everything that was brought to my attention. Players in the private playtest had much more contextual information about Scriddle. I think I should have framed things better on socials for the public puzzles. Scriddle is, for me, an experiment, not a finished game. It has hiccups, it is unbalanced and it can be frustrating at times. Still, I’m happy to see that it had a great reception overall. Some players are excited to share their scores and playthroughs. It allowed a few people to discover puzzle genres and designers they didn’t know before. Next Steps My plans for the future of Scriddle is to analyse the feedback I got and answer the question: if it was a fully fletched game, what would make a good Scriddle puzzle? Then, I’d like to design my own specific puzzles informed by it. I’d also like to create a free tool so that others puzzle designers can easily make a Scriddle-type puzzles and share it with others. they're two sides of the same coin: pacing issues in regards to player agency. imo if you want to design challenges à la Skyblock, Skygrid (pictured) etc. you want the space of possible actions to inflate at a smooth rate, with a clear sense of progression while keeping enough room for surprise
