We advocate for Qld & Aust law reform to: Improve access to Voluntary Assisted Dying (VAD); Widen eligibility criteria for VAD; & Allow Telehealth for VAD. We also aim to provide resources to educate Australians about their legal end of life options.

Sigh. Our kids and grandkids are locked out of the housing market. They are going to very angry Aussies some day.

We can't get Telehealth allowed for VAD for the terminally ill.

We seriously doubt anyone in Canberra could fix something as complicated as housing affordability

Dementia and Voluntary Assisted Dying (VAD)

"Can I use VAD if I am diagnosed with dementia?" is the most frequently asked question at any public forum on VAD.

VADSA have put together a Dementia Resources Page

Each of us needs attention, care, kindness, respect, and love.

"The Little Boy And The Old Man" by Shel Silverstein

Said the little boy, "Sometimes I drop my spoon."
Said the old man, "I do that too."
The little boy whispered, "I wet my pants."
"I do that too," laughed the little old man.
Said the little boy, "I often cry."
The old man nodded, "So do I."
"But worst of all," said the boy, "it seems
Grown-ups don't pay attention to me."
And he felt the warmth of a wrinkled old hand.
"I know what you mean," said the little old man.

Covid infection is associated with increased risk of new onset vascular dementia in adults over 50 years old.

Stay topped up with your Covid booster. If you're eligible under the guidelines go get it.

Talk to your GP👇

This isn't just for NYC.
It'll work here downunder just fine too.👇

The best way to prevent Long COVID is to prevent getting COVID-19 or getting it multiple times. That means staying up to date with COVID-19 vaccines and wearing a well-fitting mask, especially when indoors among crowds.

The image is a public health poster from NYC Health titled “Prevent Long COVID.”

It explains that the only way to prevent Long COVID is to avoid getting COVID-19, as each infection carries a risk.
It lists prevention tips:

Wear a well-fitting mask (N95, KN95, KF94) in crowded or poorly ventilated indoor spaces.

Stay up to date with COVID-19 vaccinations.

Stay home if sick, or wear a mask if you must go out.

Avoid close contact with sick people.

Wash hands often or use hand sanitizer.

Learning to replace argument with reassurance can be as hard as it is worthwhile.

But you can promise. Promise always
with a hug, a kiss, or squeezing their hand,

An Australian perspective on Dementia 👇
mylesjaybee.bsky.social
Dementia is now the leading cause of death in Australia, yet families are left waiting months or years for properly staffed residential care. The system recognises the disease as fatal, but still refuses to treat those living with it as a priority!

Dementia is now the leading cause of death in Australia. But why is it fatal?
Dementia’s effects on the brain can cause death. But they can also lead to other complications, which can then be fatal.

Don't forget your weekend wrap from NSL.

VAD gets two mentions this week.

👉 Good news - VAD laws WILL be introduced to the NT Parliament.

👉 Oliver Lee-Young: Last Cab to Darwin director, advocates for VAD as film marks 10-year anniversary.

We prefer to find primary sources of research / information when possible.

See some hints below for doing your own research. (We're a bit cautious of AI summaries tho)

👇

‼️ Most people don't realize how easy it is to find research articles on any topic to directly answer your questions.

1) Google Scholar (type in keywords)
2) PubMed (type in keywords)
3) OpenEvidence (AI based)

OpenEvidence may be the best b/c it answers questions & gives supporting articles.

‪Today is Saturday No. 21 of the Albanese Govt's 2nd term.

We still don't have:

👉 Telehealth use decriminalised for VAD tasks
👉 Medicare coverage for VAD tasks

This govt, for the 2nd term, continues to ignore our terminally ill Aussies - especially our rural & remote patients.

How about it ASAP?

We imagine this'd be supported heavily here too.

But we have a few battles to fight before this one:

👉 Removal of gag clauses in southern states
👉 VAD legislated in hold out NT
👉 Telehealth use for VAD tasks
👉 Medicare coverage for VAD
👉 Institutional obstruction of VAD in aged care facilities

Did you know? A recent Ipsos poll commissioned by Dying With Dignity Canada indicates that 84% of people across Canada support advance requests for MAID for individuals with a grievous and irremediable medical condition.

We experience so much stress during our caregiving experience. Struggling to find someone who can receive the stories of our heartache and heartbreak added to our stress.

It's why we host the #Caregiving Listener Project so you can connect with a Volunteer Listening Artist.

For so many people living with Alzheimer's disease, the present is confusing and recent experiences are difficult to retain. But older memories can be more vivid, less confusing, and can offer both greater self-confidence and happiness.

Caregiver Tip #53

"When I get overwhelmed, I try to spend time talking to my mom about her life, her memories of her childhood, and her family. When she smiles, it makes my heart smile and I don't feel so overwhelmed."

From Go Gentle re aged care:

"Always be prepared. Ask an aged care facility as far in advance as you can if VAD can take place on their premises. Ideally, find out the provider's position on VAD before becoming resident in their facility. This means you can plan, and avoid any unexpected transfers"

Check out the Go Gentle report card on VAD in Residential Aged Care Homes.

It is not good.

"Disturbing"

"85 per cent of residential aged care providers do not offer VAD access to their residents, or do not offer any public information about VAD."

It is easy to become consumed by stress and hard to find time for self-care. But preventing burnout is essential to sustaining and potentially improving our caregiving for loved ones with dementia.

In Case of Emergency.

Many have an "ICE" on their phone - accessible by medical / emergency personnel without needing to unlock the phone. You can put your medications, ailments etc in there.

I added "please respect my AHD" and where to find it to mine.

So you've completed your advance health directive.

What then?

You’ll now want to make sure it's used if the time ever comes.

It’s very important to share copies.

Here's a guide👇

Print out the pdf wallet card too. Maybe copy card to ICE on mobile.
