I'd say Vertical Motion or Yellow Mud Street, although Love in the New Millenium could work too! Frontier and Barefoot Doctor are slightly more disorienting, in the sense that they require more intimate knowledge of China to fully enjoy.

Maybe it's growing up listening to "Ferrat chante Aragon" on repeat, but I've always liked poetry set to music. And this rendering of poems by the writer/medical doctor/activist who's considered the father of Taiwanese literature is no exception.

It'll sound even cooler when I tell you it was held at the International Literary Translation College in Arles, by the Meditteranean sea, with top-notch French food and daily apéritifs on a rooftop terrace. Sparing no effort for Proust! 😁

I certainly translate very differently than I did 10 years ago (also, the additional challenge of not losing one's mind spending 20 years with a single piece of work 😅)

Of course there are limits to stylistical consistency in any group translation on account of, well, different people being different people. But for such monster-length works I also keep wondering about how one single translator's style might evolve as well if they go about it in 20 years' time

Also the part we workshopped was one of the toughest bits from Sodome et Gomorrhe and the translation was stellar (it was really fun to workshop too! - pushed me to understand Proust's work in ways I hadn't wondered about before)

Haven't read the final version, but I was part of a joint French-Taiwanese ten-day literary translation workshop in March where we workshopped part of volume 4, and I can vouch for the immense coordination effort that went into ensuring lexical consistency, with weekly meetings for years on end etc

J'ajouterai pour les auteurices qui n'ont pas la main sur les couvertures etc, qu'il est possible de faire ajouter des clauses anti-IA dans vos contrats. Que ce soit pour la non-utilisation de votre texte pour l'entraîner ou pour vos futures couvertures. On n'y pense pas mais c'est possible de négo

Les éditeurs et autres petit tips : si on pointe du doigt qu’une illus est en IAgen, ne venez pas pleurer qu’on vous affiche.
Acceptez l’erreur, excusez vous et faites en sorte de ne plus la faire !
On vous pointe du doigt avant de voir mille projets en IA chez vous car ça sera trop tard !
