I used to avoid sharing my political views as the current admin requires immigrants to provide their social media accounts to the gov. But I am sick of this. It was never about the legal status or criminality of immigrants. 6 years of being away home, no conferences abroad since 2019, and now more?

Universities are not subject to the H1B cap, so they have many, many H1Bs.

If they're subject to the new $100,000 H1B fee, that would be catastrophic to many departments.

2/3 Chinese students are wealthier than domestic students without support of any data, focusing on Chinese students in Ohio (who still remembers the last false claim about immigrants in Ohio), being surprised with authentic Chinese food in Ohio--just irked me. The amount of othering is disgusting.

1/3 This is a lot I want to say to argue against this article but I am simply too exhausted to do the emotional labor... I would like to assume the author wrote this article in a good faith, but the first paragraph--cherrypicking on one student driving an expensive car, saying that

This article reinforces the (blatantly false) stereotype that international students (esp. Chinese students) come from wealth and are privileged, and therefore, they do not deserve opportunities as much as domestic students do. Disappointed to see this from nyt. www.nytimes.com/2025/06/01/o...
