Quite apart from moral failings, there are clearly a lot of political advisors who do not understand power.
I simply do not understand how the govt can simultaneously believe (1) they don’t have enough political capital to breach the manifesto on tax and (2) they have enough to political capital to pick an unwinnable fight with their own MPs on immigration.

The Dutch election results came as a relief to many centrist voters, but this was not quite the triumphant "return to the centre" it has been portrayed as.

A little sneak preview of tonight’s book talk on ‘The Politics of Antagonism’. 📖 My research examines how in nationalist populism, emotional appeals and narratives of enmity, insecurity and threat are instrumental for voter mobilisation and policy legitimation. The empirical focus is on the US. 🇺🇸
