Thancred’s life has been a long series of not being where he should be when it matters most. He is happy to skulk in the shadows when the threat is a single, overgrown Garlean child wielding a gunblade half his size and burrowing into their supplies like a rat. He is less happy when Lucia permits Alphinaud to serve as the Contingent’s mouthpiece to an outcrop of soldier-scavengers, and then allows Alisaie to override an aether-queasy Y’shtola for a spot beside her brother. There is no true concern. The Warrior will be with them, and Lucia does Thancred the kindness of covertly informing the three of them that Thancred will be just so worried. Not untrue. Regardless, he and his team will keep a covert watch. Thancred wishes it was he himself comprising the convoy in the way most people would rather they were trudging through the snow at gunpoint if it meant a child in their life did not have to be. He doesn’t think he is being unreasonable, but it is not his place to do anything but heed orders and watch the young Scions from a distance. It’s Lucia’s call. He worked under similar campaign structures in Sharlayan and there is a piece of him that still heels to such authority on instinct. A nasty habit. When the twins emerge with collars meant for torture around their necks all sense of loyalty to any creed, mission, or reformed Garlean spy burns off in the kilm of his blood. He takes a deep, angry breath—feels himself push onto the balls of his feet, ready to make his presence known—but then there is a heavy hand on his shoulder and a crisp whisper of, “Thancred.” Urianger endangers the two of them by speaking, but Thancred was about to endanger everyone in the depths of his temper, so he supposed Urianger has made the right call. He dips his head. He is fine, he assures his oldest friend with a false expression. He is just so damn worried. When the Warrior next emerges from the tunnels beneath Garlemald, it is with only that same, young Garlean soldier-boy. The twins are not with them. Thancred assumes the worst. He wants to, at least, because the worst has ever had a way of sneaking up on him, but logic prevails and he knows that if the children were dead there would be far more screams of the deserving dead in the vicinity. The Warrior is docile, and so something must be keeping The Warrior docile. Thancred uses a chilled, stiff finger to point to a Dalmascan resistance agent, a particularly soft-footed Ala Mhigan recruit, and Urianger to follow their accomplished hero. Two of them make to depart. Urianger does not. Urianger shakes his head, slow and certain. Thancred points aggressively in The Warrior’s direction. He narrows his gaze. This is an operation. Urianger might be an academic to his core but in this frigid wasteland he is under Thancred’s command. Thancred would bother to promise to control himself, or whatever Urianger has ever asked him to do and so diligently be, but Urianger already knows the truth: Thancred is not certain what he is going to do the minute he is not being babysat. Thancred rolls his eyes and pulls back his hand. He tips his chin at his chosen scouts. The two of them nod and make to follow The Warrior’s trail alone. Urianger stays with Thancred, as he always does, despite everything. Behind them, Estinien vaults the barricade of rubble they have sheltered behind. “—Estinien!” Thancred quietly hisses, snapping around. “Get back here!” The coast is clear, the Garlean boy is gone and even the brave, conquest-crazed Ist Legion are not suicidal enough to station a guard at the mouth of their burrow in this weather. Thancred takes the much more sensible path of stepping around their cover and darting after the impulsive Ishgardian. Perhaps Urianger should have been keeping a watchful eye on their draconic friend in place of clicking his tongue at Thancred. Estinien approaches the entrance to the station, pauses, and then shoves the tip of his lance into the icy ground. He launches himself effortlessly up to the roof of the structure. Thancred hears what he does a second later, and quickly dodges behind the corpse of a magitek walker strewn about the apocalyptic street. Thancred glances back at Urianger—still stationed at the original cover—and is hit with a sharp glare. The clatter grows louder. Armed soldiers emerge, and with them, the twins. They are still collared. Alphinaud and Alisaie are not harmed, or at least not injured enough to be knocked from the height of their usual cadence. Alphinaud holds his head high in the face of capture, stoic and dignified and perhaps just a bit pompous. Alisaie looks like the only thing keeping her from dying in a glorious, suicidal blaze is the threat around her brother’s neck. The group passes Thancred on the road to a separate, unknown destination. The soldiers do not see him nor his allies, but neither do Alphinaud and Alisaie. Thancred wonders if The Warrior informed them that they were being watched over; help is coming; help is already here; Thancred simply has to bring them home. Safely, safe, and back where they belong. Estinien watches their outbound path from his vantage point. When the soldiers are far enough away to not hear him, Estinien dismounts the station roof and lands deftly upon the snow. “What the hells is wrong with you,” Thancred snaps at him. “Ceruleum depot,” Estinien says instead of answers. “Northeast. There is nothing else in that direction but ice.” “We will talk about this,” Thancred says, bitterly, already turning to face the tracks left by Louisoix’s heirs and their captors. “Later. After we get the kids back.”
