A little Black History about a quilter, Harriet Powers. There’s a children’s book about her, I put it in my little free library last year. It’s got great pictures of her quilts.

Harriet Powers was a Black folk artist who created quilts that record Bible stories, astronomical events and local legends. Born into slavery in Georgia in 1837, Powers used traditional applique techniques to create stunning works of art. /1

Forever obsessed with Elizabeth Mitchell’s graveyard quilt (1843). Grieving the loss of her 2 year old son, she made fabric coffins for each member of her surviving family, moving them from the outer edge to the centre cemetery as they passed.
