Most other translation MLs are built and trained specifically for the purpose of translation, not to make sure their output sounds convincing. They're allowed to output nonsense if they don't have enough data to translate something, and that lets you know something's wrong.

They're not trained to "understand" anything. They're trained to guess what word is more likely to come up next. If someone asks for a translation of something that doesn't have tons of examples for it to learn from, it's going to make shit up.
