US jobs figures just out show the worst year for jobs gains outside a recession since 2003. Only 50,000 jobs in December and just 584,000 jobs in all of 2025. Nearly 85% of the job gains happened by April. Little hiring the rest of the year.

Unemployment rate: 4.4% in Dec, up from 4% in January.

Over the last year, native-born unemployment is up from 3.9% to 4.3% while native-born employment has decreased by a similar amount

On the jobs report:

1. bond investors seem to be keying off the 4.375% unemployment rate.
2. It’s notable the S&P 500 underperformed the rest of the world by the largest margin since 2009 last year.
3. The US dollar weakened significantly after the IEEPA tariffs were applied in April

In a trend that predates the pandemic, the path to care for severe mental illness almost exclusively runs through the criminal justice system. Patients awaiting trial for criminal charges or found not guilty by reason of insanity are overwhelming Ohio’s understaffed state psychiatric hospitals.

To be clear: No I don't think this is the only reason! There's probably not *one* reason, but this was almost certainly a driver. As is the Trump admin's concern over China's influence in Latin America. And Trump's desire to distract from the Epstein & Jack Smith stories. And to relive the 1980s.
Something I see a lot of folks missing in discussions about what's happening Venezuela, particularly around oil, is the role U.S. oil majors' interest in Guyana—and the threat Venezuela posed to it—has in all of it. Explainer here: drilled.media/news/guyana-...
The U.S.-Venezuela-Guyana Oil Triangle
The U.S. interest in Venezuela isn’t just about the oil there, but also about the oil next door in Guyana, and the U.S. oil companies that have staked their future on it.
