“Pity the nation whose people are sheep,
and whose shepherds mislead them.
Pity the nation whose leaders are liars, whose sages are silenced,
and whose bigots haunt the airwaves.
Pity the nation that raises not its voice,
except to...acclaim the bully as hero”
Lawrence Ferlinghetti, 1958

#plan? I had no plan
just roamed over sea and sand
I found waterfalls that felt like dreams
met monsters who'd make the screamless scream
seen sunrises spread across ageing deserts
made love under a moon of the disheartened
though i am no prophet
i know where untouched edelweiss grows

The years have pulled
the clay of my face
in ways
I
never
quite
anticipated
A surreal beauty
in defiance of pretty
Wisdom wields
an impressionist's brush
Eschewing details
for the broad sweep
of a lifetime's dreams

A good poem is an aberration -
grasped midst
an oft imagined
yet unforeseen slip
through the theater drapes
that conceal mundane from visionary
and

Unable to abide
in that unadulterated light
we stumble back

Clutching our prize

Breathless

I ordered the ribs
once at a seafood joint
[it happens]
They were tolerable
[in a sad way]
Then I broke a tooth
[One of the elders
that sits in the back -
a veteran member of the congregation]
I’ve never ordered ribs
at a seafood joint again
[A damn fool thing from the outset]

Don't be obsequious
I'll speak to your keeper
No call for a waterless hole
in this arid place
Only a fresh mirage
will see you serviceable
but it won't last
It never does
It never will
