Many people say Rio de Janeiro is incredibly dangerous, but I can tell you from living there, I felt much safer there than in the US and to the extent that there was violence, it felt much more predictable and avoidable.

There are plenty of places that are better than the US, and there are places where they have different problems than in the US. There are plenty of places where it's tough to get a job there, but if you have a solid job/client base you can live there very happily as a digital nomad.

Note: I have no idea what living in these places is like, but I also think a) it's good to know your options and b) there is definitely a false narrative in the US that everywhere has problems and so the US is just as bad as everywhere else. That is absolutely not true.

In my Dutch class here in the Netherlands they were teaching us about the political system & they had a graph where one axis was progressive to (I’m blanking) and the other was liberal to conservative.
