What a wonderful Re-engage tea party this afternoon. With our guests we enjoyed wreath making, a lovely spread for tea and then some carol singing.
If you can spare one afternoon a month to volunteer at a tea party please do get involved - it is fabulous 🥰.

Just back from a fabulous reengage.org.uk tea party at www.shrewsburyflaxmillmaltings.org.uk

Fascinating behind the scenes tour then delicious food by Turned Wood Cafe. Cannot recommend it highly enough.

Thank you to Heritage England for the community micro grant that made this possible too.

Once a month we drive for our local Re-engage tea party. We take guests to a volunteer host house or venue & spend the afternoon chatting to folk who find themselves isolated in later life
Today we celebrated the 80th of one of our youngest guests.

It’s marvellous 🤩

I am still scarred by the study www.ucl.ac.uk/pals/sites/p... with this friendship ‘map’ where the label reminds us there were 3 children not on the map after 1 year @ secondary because no one nominated them and they couldn’t nominate a single friend. This is a critical matter to reflect on.

A privilege to have a bit of a #RADY rant in print alongside quite a list of contributors in #UnfinishedBusiness The life & legacy of Sir Tim Brighouse
The most important takeaway for me was the real David Cameron (one of the editors) ‘we don’t inherit our future’ it’s time for action. Be more Tim!

Starting to feel a bit real now I’ve got out of the car … @crownhousepub.bsky.social have the book here … Unfinished Business is really here. Can’t wait to get my hands on a copy

Sitting in the carpark of Uni of Birmingham hotel plucking up courage to go into the book launch for “Unfinished Business” the tribute to Sir Tim Brighouse and ‘call to arms’ for what we should do next, as the title suggests which I somehow got asked to write a piece for imposter syndrome alert !!

A privilege to do this little cobweb buster before work - away from home is bad news but sea is amazing 🤩
September 5, 2024 at 6:47 AM
I hate being away from home but I love being by the seaside ! Looking forward to work with Ceredigion and Powys SIAs tomorrow 👍

👌Agree. Did you see this paper? Every Y7 child named their friends after 1 yr at the school, & researchers constructed a map from it (p40). My heart breaks when I read that 3 children aren't on it as no one nominated them and they didn't nominate anyone nuffieldfoundation.org/wp-content/u...

Train on time so far and this @loicmnzs.bsky.social book to continue on route without distractions. Anyone else read this one? Thoughts? Actions taken as a result? I would love to know.

Really looking forward to being back in Caerleon tomorrow.

In other news, before heading off on the train to Newport South Wales for v exciting day at Caerleon comprehensive tomorrow .. I plaited the garlic we grew.

Thanks to @kathrynmorgan.bsky.social for sharing this - great reminder and of course brilliantly written backed by research as we would expect of Dylan Wiliam. My favourite is number 3 .. but I am Daniel Willingham biased 😉

(b) working at that 4 points ahead level already..

This gives you, and the learner, something to aim for.

What is the difference in knowledge, skills and understanding between these 2 learners?

What could you do about it?

This is a long term approach, but it works.

And of course, where in England we can view progress measures, what we know is that on average our learners disadvantaged by poverty do not achieve the ‘same amount of progress’ as their peers, which means gaps actually increase.

Feed this data into any kind of statistical estimates prog (of which I am genuinely a huge fan) & it will ‘tell’ you that statistically this learner is likely to achieve a lower ‘level’ (insert age-specific measure in here)

Sometimes this info is used to set targets, or 'sets'.

...means that they are starting (on average) behind their peers.

It doesn’t matter what measure you use, but mean average ‘scores’ (SATS, national test, CATs, GL etc) show that our learners disadvantaged by poverty have lower mean average scores.

However, this immediately puts our learners disadvantaged by (e.g.) poverty at a further disadvantage.

Why?

Because the impact of the disadvantage they faced will more than likely have had an impact on their prior attainment, national data agrees.

This in turn..

It’s
1. Shrewsbury stretch of the River Severn.
2. Helping with the return (after 6 years) of the annual ‘Severn Mile Swim’ - 100 in the water doing 1 mile fastest finish in 18 mins incredible.
3. Absolutely will be back (daily) as I am lucky enough to have this as my home ‘water’.
