I wanted to provide a thread here of some of the things I've been involved with in the fight against unethical generative AI for easy reference, starting with my work with @GaryMarcus.bsky.social. Our article shows irrefutable evidence of blatant plagiarism 🧵

Literally this exact thing.

Surprise surprise, I've been saying this for years.

Article, movie studio Lionsgate is struggling to make AI generated films with partner Runway, their catalog is too small, even Disney's is too small.

One of the work trucks at our hiking spot had his mom on the back.

Found a dead snake while hiking today which bummed me out, but later found this guy in the middle of the trail, looking like a rock, far from any water. Grabbed him up and hiked him over to a pond where I know the snappers live. Godspeed little fella.
Baby snapping turtle in my hand, looking all cute and and angry.

Copyright is literally all the little guy has protecting them from the big guy. You might think it needs reform, I agree, but "Abolish condoms because they break sometimes!" is how you sound.
rahll.bsky.social
Come up with your own ideas and you won't have any problems. Hope this helps.

Well hey, you may have some money coming your way!

🔥 Warner Bros is suing Midjourney!🔥

They've cited mine and Gary's work like in the other suit, including that I was banned for criticizing the company.

This now means Midjourney is being sued by Warner Bros, Disney, Universal, and the class action from artists.

Let's gooo! 🔥

Wanna know what's even funnier, the CEO of Midjourney David Holz has basically the same look, could be brothers.

1/7 This is Showrunner AI, a startup that just a few weeks ago got Amazon funding to become the “Netflix of AI” as reported by Forbes, Business Insider, NBC News and so on.

Frustratingly, no news outlets asked or researched the data used by Showrunner. Well after some digging here’s it is👇

The Showrunner AI people say it's NOT just a tool, it's a competitor, and that pencils don't stand up and write by themselves.

This is what artists have been saying, but used as pro-AI marketing. It's the quiet part out loud, and quite frankly, probably good evidence in court.

Stumbled across a turkey and her two poults in the woods today. They weren't bothered by us at all, we walked alongside them for a few minutes while mom picked berries, it felt like Jurassic Park.

Later I saw one fly 50 feet up into a tree. I couldn't believe it, there were others up there too, lol

Maybe engage with the article instead of just the headline.

These frames couldn't exist without all the hard work filmmakers and VFX artists do. Blatant plagiarism and infringement. 🧵
Side by side images showing how RunwayML directly copied frames from 2012 with their AI.
rahll.bsky.social
The CEO of RunwayML has previously blocked me because of these types of criticisms, but I'd love for him to explain why he's ripping off existing movies for their AI products. Is one class action lawsuit not enough?🧵

Lol, it's not artificial intelligence, that's just what they call it. It doesn't have rights, it's a company's product.
rahll.bsky.social
Exactly this. I have lots of examples of where it basically shifts it into some form of 3-point portrait lighting to gloss it up. They have a rating system to help them tune their models, and it's clear the people ranking them gravitate towards generic, safe lighting with punched up details.
rahll.bsky.social
He's not suggesting that at all, and he's rightfully pointing out you have less than no clue about what you're talking about. You're engaged in a vibes based argument against facts. Give it up.

The tech industry needs serious, meaningful regulation about the things it can sell and how it can sell them, and the neoliberal bullshit of “free markets” has allowed this nakedly harmful software to proliferate, taking advantage of the fact that more people than ever feel alone and desperate

Don’t think I’ve ever muttered the words “fuck me sideways” quite so much reading a story as this one.

Tell you what, come back at the conclusion of the lawsuit, we'll chat then.
rahll.bsky.social
And that material literally ended up in Disney's lawsuit because they agree with me, so?

You absolutely did not read the entire 110 pages of the filing, and yes I do know how the technology functions. Here, enjoy a thread.

No it doesn't. Please come back after you've read the filing and then maybe we can have a discussion. I expect this is the last we'll talk.

Midjourney banned me 3 times and updated their terms of service without notifying users (which is illegal) because I exposed them. They've banned others simply for being critical of them. Does that sound like they're doing things ethically and legally to you?

I understand it's difficult to deal with the fact that the technology you love is unethical and hurting artists and that Disney is about to obliterate Midjourney, I hope there's enough copium where you live to get you through these trying times. Take care and good luck.
