I love seeing all the excitement about anglerfishes this past week!

Last week, researchers from the NGO Condrik Tenerife captured rare footage of a deep-sea anglerfish, Melanocetus johnsonii, in broad daylight—an unusual sight for a fish that typically dwells in the deep ocean.

This octopus is a sucker for jellies 🐙✨️

The seven-armed octopus, Haliphron atlanticus, has only been observed by MBARI’s ROVs three times in more than three decades. This one was holding the bell of an egg-yolk jellyfish in its arms—perhaps using its meal for defense or to help catch more prey.

Strange discovery! The Sea Pen, a bizarre underwater animal, looks like a glowing quill pen rooted to the ocean floor. Found in deep seas, it’s actually a colony of tiny organisms working together! It glows in the dark when touched, making it one of nature’s most peculiar and beautiful creatures.

Many deep-sea fish have eyes with an aphakic gap, which is a gap between the lens and the iris. This allows extra light to enter the eye to increase the likelihood that they spot something passing by. Predator or prey.

The hadal zone (6,000–11,000 m) is the deepest part of the ocean. Some creatures like the deep-sea snailfish live here, surviving crushing pressures.

We moved this guy into a tub because we were confident it was still alive, and we were right.

It’s a dumbo octopus, or umbrella octopus, which are a group of deep-sea pelagic (open water) octopuses.

After a couple small tissue snips for genetics, he went back into the ocean.
