Plug & Play, introduced in Windows 95 (1995), was a standard that allowed the automatic detection & installation of drivers for the system’s hardware on boot, or for peripherals when connected by the user. This negated the need for users to do so manually, saving time & know-how.

XBox Music was a media player app, introduced in Windows 8 (2012), and meant as the successor to Windows Media Player. In Windows 10 (2015), it was redesigned & rebranded as Groove Music. In Windows 11 (2021), the app was again reborn, this time known simply as Media Player. 🎵🎥

Windows 10 Version 2004 - a.k.a. Windows 10 Version 20H1 - was the official Windows 10 May 2020 Update. Originally to be called Version 2003, Microsoft decided to change the name, likely to minimise any potential confusion with Windows Server 2003. ✅

Windows 7 build 6568, from 12th March 2008, introduced the Windows Health Centre: an early iteration of what would become the Action Centre in the final release of 7 (2009). It was denoted in the notification area by a lighthouse, compared with a flag in the final release. 🕯️🏳️

Windows Update - introduced in Windows 98 (1998) - offers regular security & feature updates for Windows. Originally accessed via a Microsoft webpage, in Windows Vista (2006) it became integrated into Control Panel. Since Windows 10 (2015), it is accessible via the Settings app.

Phodeo was a media browsing feature tested as part of Windows Explorer (now File Explorer) in various development builds of Windows Vista (2006) between 2003-04. Meant to let users sort & view media in a visually-appealing way, it did not make the final release of Vista.

Before the widespread use of the Internet, Microsoft developers shared Windows builds with testers on discs. Many of them had unique designs. Examples include the CDs for Windows NT 3.1 build 196 (with multiple Windows logos) & Windows ME build 2452 (with low-poly dog & robot).🤖
