The Avro Arrow is a pretty stellar example of how the enthusiastic slashing of federal spending can not only end up costing the government more in the short term, but can put a country back decades in terms of scientific R&D.
As well, in 1957, the Progressive Conservatives under John Diefenbaker ended 22 years of Liberal rule. Dief made cutting federal spending a major priority. He also did not get along with Avro president Crawford Gordon.
