I was walking through #Paris the other day and got to visit the Liberation of Paris Museum, which cover the World War II.

In the exhibition, one thing caught my eye... A newspaper from October 4, 1940, warning people to be aware of fake news.

Funny how the strategies never change.

Over a dark green wall, there's a framed edition of the Paris-soir (which translates to Paris Afternoon) newspaper. The edition is dated from October 4, 1940. The headline says "General Charles de Gaulle is sentenced to death by the military jury". Circled in red by me, a column of the newspaper says "Be aware of fake news". This image is a close up of the column titled "Be aware of fake news". The column says: "The most fanciful news continues to be put into circulation, both in occupied France and in the free zone. This is how we can hear that a French army of one million and two hundred thousand men is in England; that General Weygand was killed in Syria because he wanted to disarm our troops in the Levant; that German aviators refuse to fly over Great Britain because the English emit magnetic waves into the air that sets the planes on fire. Similarly, it is said that the British took over Calais and Dunkirk, some even claim that they would occupy part of the Maginot line, and some still say that the Germans would have proclaimed the autonomy of Brittany and that the French of the other provinces would have been driven out... Of course, these are only more or less tendentious inventions without any basis, and those who spread them and those who repeat them are liable to the penalties and sanctions that repress the spread of false news." Aside from that column, it is also possible to read an announcement from the German government stating that the requests to free war prisoners won't be considered. Below that announcement, there's another news saying that the food ratio will now grant five hundred grams of sugar per person per month.
