A Hanukkah message
A Candle Is Not a Military Parade
(This was published as my "Rabbinic Reflections" in my synagogue's monthly Bulletin for December 2025.) A candle is not a military parade. That might seem obvious, but both are reasonable possibilities of how Hanukkah might have been celebrated. Part of the Hanukkah story, after all, is that of a military victory. In fact, during the Hasmonean reign following that victory, there was another holiday, Yom Nicanor, that celebrated Judah Maccabee’s decisive victory in a battle against Nicanor, a major Seleucid general.
