last year, i remember thinking "yeah, things are different from last year when not that many people used genai, and now its commonplace"

these days if i see someone on a laptop its like a 40% chance chatgpt is open

next year am i gonna be like 'dammmn nobody used genai in 2025' yet again

finally settled in back at home after aiide

i've deleted and rewrote my thoughts on aiide probably a hundred times at this point

aiide was a life-changing experience for me. i'm positive that, as i begin my journey into academia, this conference will remain a formative memory forever.

New Paper: Game Design is Generative Design. Designing a procedural generator and designing a game share a lot of skills, problems and philosophies, even if we think of them as distinct. I try to connect them here, for good!

I'm back with the last day of AIIDE 2025 live posting!
We're back to live (almost, because I was so engrossed I couldn't post during the talk) with Jonathan Schaeffer's keynote on the past, present, and potential future of Game AI.

What an amazing retrospective with insight into the future! I'll be thinking about this one for a while.

yet another day goes by and i continue to be swindled by the rl hype train

this talk was so fun, schaefer is simply an amazing amazing speaker and has so much energy and charisma to his words
Absolutely delighted by this last #aiide keynote by Jonathan Schaefer. It’s about the history of computer chess but you may know him as the guy who “solved” Checkers: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jonatha...

one day left for aiide. looking forward to this last one! the last couple days were so sick, ill probably make a post with my feelings at the end of things

wordle but for game mechanics when
Next up is a case study presented by Brooke Szajda on GameGoogle, a search engine that can be used to locate mechanics within games, such as searching for the concept of "basketball" within a game.

Very cool stuff, I wonder about the potential for designing an association game using the system!

this talk was very good and my favourite part about it was definitely the "i spent 10 minutes finding the cohost font someone please help me with time management" comment hidden in one of the slides.

such a relatable struggle
The first paper session of the day is on Mechanics and Design, and we're starting off with a Mike Cook @mtrc.bsky.social talk arguing that Game Design is Generative Design.

Thinking through the argument here was really compelling, and makes me want to read the paper right this instant!

I was so so happy to give an invited talk today at EXAG, a workshop I co-founded over ten years ago! It was quite a personal talk about how research communities grow and change (and die sometimes), what generative AI means for our community today, and the value of weird, pointless research.
Starting off Day 2 of EXAG with Mike Cook's @mtrc.bsky.social amazingly titled keynote 'Being Weird at the End of the World'. Really looking forward to this talk!

We're back with an EXAG speculative game jam! We do be speculating (I am not a fan of the technologies we have been tasked with discussing, but I liked the idea of the jam!)

Our group came up with a game dev simulator type game, except you're an evil AI company

by the way, for any oomfies that dont know about my research work that are confused why im suddenly tweeting about ai please understand i'm referring to ai as in smash cpus (or like, level generation), not as in chatgpt.

yes. it is very confusing that they use the same term. i do not support genai.
