Not even 6hrs since landing in a new country and someone’s already caught me being an idiot in 4k 🤣🤣

Also, ice is a lot harder to slide down than you’d think

Seems like 2026 has a lot of mountains in store for me…as well as multiple trips to Pakistan haha

Starting it off by spending the next few weeks amongst the peaks of Central Asia to search for Snow Leopards and Pallas Cats, but for now, I’ll leave you with some critters

Lucky 13

Researchers in Western #HudsonBay have tracked over 4600 #polarbears across 40 years

There have only been 12 confirmed cases where a mom adopted an abandoned cub

She emerged from her den in the spring with 1 cub, but when we found her again in Nov, she had 2 cubs!

Packing for my next trip where I’ll be camping at 4000m/13000ft in -40c weather in Central Asia next week

Taking bets to see if I can fit everything pictured in my luggage 🤣

Sometimes I think she’s demon spawn

But she lets me rub my face in her belly whenever I feel like it, so it’s a fair trade

Look at her acting all cute as if she didn’t utterly fk my hand up last night 😂

Polar bear sparring is a sport I never knew existed

They’ll bite, tackle, grab, & roll, then rest. Inevitably, one of them gets restless and the punching, kicking, and swinging starts up again

Amazing animals

The experience of making eye contact with wild animals is such a special one

I always wonder what they think of me. Some kind of red monkey, offspring of a Ford Transit? (I’m usually in a red jacket, and was hopping in and out of vans to look at bears)

Finally got myself a new cat bed!

Bit pricey tho. $13,000 and I had to supply my own blanket!

Nov 19

Immediately after spending time with a mom and her cub, we turn around only to find that yet another mom, and TWO cubs, were right behind us!

You soon come to understand why all the signs in this town are bent out of shape - they make great toys for bears

Preliminary testing on my cats at home shows that the AF performance is comparable to the Sony

Weather isn’t good so it’ll be a while before I can take this outside for a proper test run on some active subjects

The case for the Viltrox 2x lacks padding on the bottom, for some reason
December 10, 2025 at 5:39 PM
I took 150 images at f/5.6, 8, 12, 16, & 22

10 images with the Sony 300mm f/2.8 GM, 10 with the 300mm + Sony 2x, and 10 with 300mm + Viltrox 2x

There was no discernible difference in image quality, but the Viltrox consistently let in about 1/4 stop more light than the Sony with the same settings
December 10, 2025 at 5:39 PM
But the Viltrox has zero play in the rear, and tons of play in the front

How the weather sealing compares will need to come in future testing.

No rain forecast this week, so it’ll have to wait, but seems promising so far from lightly splashing sink water at it
December 10, 2025 at 5:39 PM
Build quality is comparable, but Sony takes the slightest of edges.

Both have similar #cons though -

The Sony has some play in the front and rear mounts
December 10, 2025 at 5:39 PM
#Teleconverter battles

Viltrox 2x - 257g, 5.2cm tall w/ lens caps, 4.3cm w/o

#Sony 2x - 236g, 5cm tall w/ lens caps, 4cm w/o
December 10, 2025 at 5:39 PM
The new #Viltrox 2x TC for Sony E-Mount is here!

1st impressions:

- Comparable image quality & AF speed

- Sony has marginally better build quality

- Viltrox seems to let in 1/4 stop more light

After walking to one end of the beach, mom decided that the ice wasn’t up to her standard, and walked back towards land

Our patience rewarded, as the relentless clouds across the boreal forest finally shine some light through on her second pass

Nov 19 -

A young mom and her cub strolling across the beach, testing the newly formed sea ice of the Hudson ahead

Due to a late #winter, sea ice has been slow to form, & the #bears have gone over 6 months without a meal

Despite their hunger, they walked right by us, paying no attention

Sorry for the delay. Issues have been resolved.

Anyways, lots of bears incoming!

The first time I went looking for polar bears was quite possibly one of the most ridiculous days of my life

There’s only one place in the world where you can go from never having seen a polar bear, to seeing well over 30 in just a few hours

Our first bear sighting started even before sunrise
