For an historical event for which words fall short, the deadpan prose of Valdek and the simple mouse drawings of his son, Artie, make Maus an essential read. 3/3

The incredible story of the father’s survival is set against his son’s opinion of the man he became. The inter-generational impact of the holocaust is a major theme of the book. As is the difficulty of writing a history of the holocaust (the fate of his mother’s diaries is a major subplot). 2/3
