Impossible to pick a favourite Redford performance or even directing project. But I've randomly pictured him running around NYC in those jeans and tweed herring bone jacket declaring "I just read books" at least once a week for decades now.
Robert Redford rocking light blue denim jeans and a grey herring bone sports jacket in Three Days of the Condor. RIP.

Annual solo wargaming survey! And hey, if you enjoy Wars of Marcus Aurelius of Stilicho: Last of the Romans why not give them a mention?

🎲 Don't be *that* gamer ‼️

For 2 years, *after* we posted the results of the solo/solitaire wargaming survey, we'd get a pile of comments lamenting that "No one told *ME* about this!!"

Well, here's your 2025 invite – go vote for your favorites!

I used to make this argument (first part anyways) in the mid-80s when I was 16 or 17 and then I got older and realized I was wrong.

Oh yeah completely agree. An era-defining creative talent and an artist on the level of anyone in the 20th century, at least.

Great piece! I absolutely adore this movie.

Nashville and Killer of Sheep are the two greatest films ever made about the United States.
mattzollerseitz.bsky.social
"Nashville is a portrait of the United States on the eve of the Bicentennial, but at times it seems to be describing the United States fifty years later. I saw it on a big screen during its re-release and was knocked out again by its audacity and perceptiveness."

Panoramic shot of a massive crowd gathered for a music concert in Robert Altman's Nashville. The location is the Parthenon in Nashville, Tennessee, an exact size replica of the Parthenon in Athens, Greece.

This is equivalent to Gen Xers not answering the door to random knocks. A learned survival behaviour dictated by circumstance. I approve!

The Elementals starts as a droll southern gothic horror-comedy but builds to something genuinely terrifying. Some may bump on the slow burn pacing & some aspects haven’t aged well, but that ending is an all-timer. Squint hard enough & you might see shades of Beetlejuice (co-written by McDowell).

Happy birthday to the late, great Michael McDowell, who would have been 75 today. To celebrate (and to get you reading his great books), we're doing a FLASH ONE-DAY SALE on two of his best novels, THE ELEMENTALS and COLD MOON OVER BABYLON, both just $2.99 today only on Kindle worldwide!
