what a paragraph. I’ve been thinking about the idea of non-linear experience of time just recenty and this is a really precise definition of a similar concept from J G Ballard. www.jgballard.ca/non_fiction/...
All my own fiction could be regarded as an attempt to escape from time -- or, more exactly, from linear time, as it seems to me that time is quantifiable and non-linear in far more aspects, and that the most significant relationships and experiences of our lives are intelligible only in non-linear terms. (If this seems doubtful, pause for a moment and examine the goulash of ideas, images, activities, relationships and dreams that make up your own life -- how many of them make sense in linear terms, how adequately would a framework such as Pride and Prejudice or The Magic Mountain, to take two examples at random, represent the texture of your own consciousness and behaviour? Far less adequately, I would guess, than a framework such as that of "You and Me and the Continuum" or "The Atrocity Exhibition." This is no comparison of literary merit, I hasten to add.)

I am fascinated by this weird mushroom structure that I discovered in a hotel that looked long dead, but was still operational. You lose any sense of time and place here. True onsenpunk experience.
Giant concrete mushroom-looking structure in an outdoor hot spring bath. Everything is surrounded with deep green. Top of the “mushroom” is home to an ecosystem of moss, grass and lichen. Mushroom-looking structure looms over hot spring water while the trees and grass are capturing back the concrete building of the hotel. Silver water of the hot spring contrasts with the polished column of the mushroom structure.

and now finally the second Steampunk anthology arrives! I read the first one 3-4 years ago and there are stories there that I think about at least once a week. These anthologies are a treasure.
