Only 4 years ago, the IMF recognised that climate change poses risks to macroeconomic stability.

It cannot be ignored.

Our new report shows how and why the #IMF can't give up on climate, with recommendations for its Surveillance review.

Our recommendations for the World Bank Group and ADB:

🛑 write #coal exclusion into Board-approved energy strategies and policies

🏭 clear language to stop funding for #CaptiveCoal

❌ end indirect financing via commercial banks

🧰 apply coal exclusions to all financing instruments and modalities

She wears glasses, a covid-19 facemask, and hold a cardboard sign handwritten with "coal pollutes our environment".

Cutting out #coal is a crucial step towards a clean, safe energy future.

A step that the ADB and the World Bank Group, including IFC_org, have all committed to.

Yet, their coal exclusion policies are riddled with loopholes allowing public funds to leak to damaging coal projects.

It's time to cut out #coal for good 🏭✊

Despite making commitments to stop funding coal-related projects, the World Bank Group and @adb.org do not have robust, comprehensive and enforceable coal exclusion policies.

Our new report with Trend Asia follows the money behind the Tangguh LNG project and makes key demands to multilateral development banks:

🛑 Do not fund #TangguhLNG expansion

🛑 Close loopholes leaking public money to filthy #FossilGas

#TangguhLNG was financed by

export credit agencies in 🇯🇵🇩🇪

big commercial banks from 🌍🌏

and multilateral development banks: @adb.org directly; IFC & AIIB via financial intermediaries.

Now plans are afoot to expand it — a clear violation of climate commitments made by Indonesia & MDBs.

Tangguh LNG: Big project, huge risks⚠️

This #FossilGas project in West Papua has destroyed vital mangrove forests, violated local people's rights & increased emissions in a climate-vulnerable region.

91% of new #renewable power in 2024 was cheaper than fossil fuels.

So why does @adb.org want to lock Asia into #FossilGas dependency?

Our inputs to the ADB's energy policy review show why & how the bank must end all forms of fossil fuel finance ⤵️

It’s time @adb.org ensured a truly just energy transition 🔋

The bank’s Energy Policy review must:
√ End fossil fuel support
√ Close loopholes
√ Reject false solutions
√ Ensure accountability
√ Prioritise renewables for people

Africa already has the solutions:
☀️ abundant renewable resources
💡community-led systems
✊people power

Public finance from multilateral development banks should be supporting renewable energy initiatives for and by people, across the continent.

🌍 The rush for gas is already wreaking havoc on communities in Africa, increasing debt, and jeopardising climate goals.

💡 Now is the moment for public financiers to back a 100% renewable, people-powered, just energy transition for Africa.
