10 years ago, when I introduced a bill to make public colleges & universities tuition free, it was called "radical." Not today. Over 100 colleges & universities now offer free tuition to working class students.

Now, we must expand that idea to all public colleges & universities.

Expert knowledge is under attack and the suppression & destruction of it will have deep and longterm impacts.
Some of the questionnaires being sent to researchers include connotative, charged language—huge red flags, but also gives insights into the whys of current admin’s long game.
Are government employees protecting documents, records, and expert knowledge from being purged in their departments?

Boston Mayor Michelle Wu at the House hearing on sanctuary cities:

"If you wanted to make us safe, pass gun reforms. Stop cutting Medicaid. Stop cutting cancer research. Stop cutting funds for veterans. That is what will make our cities safe."

With Handmaids Tale people focus on the shock of the mass rapes in the book and the show.

But how the regime came to be in power in that book keeps me awake at night because it is playing out in very intricate detail in our real lives right now.

They are not draining the swamp. Prez Musk and Handler Trump are feeding the swamp monsters.
Tesla earned $2.3 billion in the United States in 2024.

You'd think it paid a lot in taxes, right?

Well it paid precisely $0 in federal income taxes last year.

You want waste and fraud? Look at what some big corporations and the rich are getting away with.
Tesla Paid Zero Federal Income Tax in 2024, Despite $2.3 Billion in Income
This brings Tesla’s average tax rate over the past three years to 0.4 percent.

It’s accurate and speaks to the twofold charlatan strategy of simultaneously appeasing fragile egos that want to see the MAGA stamp all over the world and passing no end of dangerous policy while people are outraged at the cavalier threats to neighbours’ sovereignty.

Love Rick Mercer - especially when he was skewering Pierre Polievre.
This skit on PP’s full government pension since he was 31 years old is worth rewatching. Funny, not funny.

We risk our lives to fight your fires, and we came en masse to help with the 9/11 tragedy and felt your pain and grieved with you. We will always be there for the US. Why are we being punished, America?

Truth. Most teachers are self-motivated and can find and optimize their talents best when not micromanaged.
Counterintuitive: the less we demand from teachers, the more we achieve.

Devastating for scientists and their research, and everyone who benefits from that research.

I’m not sure if everyone outside academia is aware that a delay or “pause” in grant funding often means the researchers themselves are lost from the field, along with their expertise.
NIH appears to have canceled/postponed all of its study sections—the independent review panels that approve federal grants for health research.

Such grants fund the work/salaries of 300k people at more than 2,500 institutions
All NIH study sections canceled indefinitely. This will halt science and devastate research budgets in universities.

I’ve worked in educational DEI for over two decades. The abbreviation has undergone many shifts, as has thinking about it and approaches. It has never been a perfect science nor a cure-all but it has aimed to make experiences of those in the system fairer.
