SF and F writer, now with a finished espionage/gay family cosy looking for a publisher. Have been living in Nicaragua since 2010. Also take photos for Alamy, a stock agency in the UK. Interested in watching foxes follow cats into self-domestication.
I just watch BBC on Claro Cable. If I wanted to immerse myself in US madness, I wouldn't be living in Nicaragua.

It was way friendly than I feared it would be, but then not everyone in Nicaragua pays the rent on time for around seven years (I moved in before 2018). El Doctor said he knew someone who'd have paid $200 US for the aquarium. Shrug, sigh.

They wanted to know why I didn't want to continue living here. A lot of small things that added up: no water tank so no regular water, uneven patio, two rooms I couldn't climb stairs to get to, some tiny steps up or down in the house, free water (not a huge expense),nearer my friend's hotel.

She's got the superficial attractiveness of youth. Not very attractive. Marrying Kirk was her only way out of obscurity at the time. So, next JD Vance?

Is the competition e-books, which seem to have the ability to stay in "print" forever?

A stock photo agency is trialing AI searches which my Nicaraguan helper is "every man" (searches for people by first name last name which aren't in my caption or keywords). People who want a photo of some place get shown photos mostly of places the AI think might be some place but aren't.

If praying did anything useful, God would have turned all the gun factories into slag, and left puddles of congealed steel in every house with private weapons. And for the hunters, turned the guns into compound bows and throwing sticks with long darts.

Prove any of them actually pray. They certainly don't think.

America's politics in terms of people with real traction are as far left as slightly left of center in Europe. The propaganda against Sweden when I was a kids was that the system Swedes were under caused massive amounts of suicides, which was possibly not even true.

You need to think how to stop this. Not fantasize about school shootings.

In Australia, a Muslim man grabbed the gun out of the shooter's hands and restrained him until the cops took over. Heroes think fast and do things.

That's what he is.

Passing this qualified you to buy a weapon. Once you had your weapon, you fired it on a test range and the police kept sample bullets.

Nicaragua, before 2018, had reasonable gun laws. You took lessons in gun safety and passed test. You took lessons on safe gun handling. You passed a police check and either a psych evaluation and|or had no record of domestic abuse recorded with female police who handled domestic abuse.

Lethal riots, yes, in 2018, which were encouraged by the US. Those who took US money or incited riots then for free were offer parole if they promised not to do that again, and shipped off to the US or Rome if they broke parole.

Trump's regime did away with bans on gun ownership based on mental heath conditions, red flag laws, and some other thing I don't remember. Since I've moved here, Nicaragua has not had a school shooting but does monitor social media and hospitalized one adolescent who posted threats.

They use insanely inflated numbers to justify the lie. Drug buyers tend to actually look for major drugs, and often have to have a reference to buy so the dealer isn't going to have those sales used against him in a court of law. Cocaine is not instantly addictive.

When I moved to Nicaragua, I felt that something was missing and it was neither feral pigeons or English sparrows. I realized it was squirrels. But there are squirrels in the countryside, very colorful. In town, we have had sloths in the municipal park.

Nicaragua doesn't have any city squirrels, but the country squirrels are very decorative. I assume the urban squirrels were delicious during bad times. You might have people who remember how to cook them. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Squirrel A pack of Russian squirrels killed and ate a dog.

Remember the Rosenstrasse wives. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosenst...
And they left Germany as soon as they got their Jewish husbands out of custody, but they did get them out.

Nicaragua is said to be a dictatorship, but I've never been asked to show ID except when negotiating a rental contract or buying something with my US bank card. Never in 15 years been stopped in the street and asked for ID by cop.
December 13, 2025 at 4:18 PM
I'm a foreigner in Nicaragua. The only people who ask me for my residency card are people looking at my US credit or bank card or renting me a place to live, never by police on the street.
