Keeping a good pace in a long campaign is hard! Adding side quests is always tempting, and a 2-3 session tangent seems like no big deal. Then you remember that you only play once a week and sometimes need to cancel, and that tangent just ate up a whole month.

Is there a spellcaster in your party that's doing maybe just a little *too* good in combat? Are they only really fearing for their lives in the huge boss fights where a TPK is on the table?

Mix one or two of these into your next encounter and see if that changes.

GM Tip: While there's no need to prepare every detail, don't under-prepare because you were afraid your efforts would be wasted. Nothing you make is ever wasted. You can use it later, in this campaign or the next. Even if you never use it, the practice still made you a better GM.

DM Tip: Give your monsters healing!

Encounter balance doesn't stop at initiative. If you made a custom bad guy and realize after the fight started that you gave them way too little health, have them pull out a healing potion.

Feel unfair? Have the party find a few more on their body!
