Romance writer, reader, chronic over-thinker. Will always respect your pronouns and autonomy but will never respect your choice to put ketchup on a hot dog. I have become author, destroyer of worlds.
Since Spooky Season is approaching, let me show you the prettiest book I could only read during the daytime otherwise I'd get too creeped out. (I'm not usually much of a horror reader but it was so gorgeous I couldn't pass it up): Never Whistle at Night

Doesn't it suck how the algo will push The Worst Person You Know and their terrible behavior b/c it loves outrage?

ANYWAY here are some Indigenous authors to follow and/or read: Tommy Orange www.prhspeakers.com/speaker/tomm...

His story in Never Whistle at Night had me hiding under the covers

I wanted to talk about some Indigenous authors to follow and/or read today like ‪@littlebadger.bsky.social‬

My middle-grader would not put Elatsoe down.

TOTALLY UNRELATED, doesn't it suck how much the algo will push The Worst Person You Know engaging in terrible behavior because it loves outrage?

I wanted to talk about some Indigenous authors to follow and/or read today like Dani Trujillo www.amazon.com/stores/Dani-...

Dani's work is also in Never Whistle at Night which also has a gorgeous cover and that I could only read in daylight.
Dani Trujillo: books, biography, latest update
Follow Dani Trujillo and explore their bibliography from Amazon's Dani Trujillo Author Page.

It is hideous how the algo advantages the Worst People You Know. It loves outrage. Therefore, it loves people who have no compunction about doing awful things that make everyone rightfully mad. The only thing I can think to do is try to not interact with anything related to them.

I cannot wrap my head around multiple authors, after having their works pirated and scraped for AI, then finding out that their publishers did not register their copyright with the US Copyright Office, often for multiple works and often in direct violation of the terms of their contracts.

Now that I'm done with Trad Pub, here's all the query nonsense I wholly disregarded after my first query go-round.

Day 7: This is probably my worst transgression: I re-queried agents with the same book!

I saw this candle from JD + Kate Industries on SM and smashed buy because it's incredible. Unfortunately there was a minor issue when it arrived. I reached out and they fixed it SO FAST. Nordstrom-level customer service. I am so impressed! (also the candle smells so good)

Now that I'm done with Trad Pub, here's all the query nonsense I wholly disregarded after my first query go-round.

Day 5: Agents with "bonus" query tracker questions went directly on the DNQ list.

If an agent asked for my fancast for my MCs or a mood board or my playlist? Instant pass.

Chet GPT strikes again. (Chet, the nepo intern who you must relegate to the simplest tasks because he'll most likely mess it up.)

I hate having to babysit Chet GPT because my company is friends with his dad.
Did you know that LLMs fail at around 70% of all typical office tasks like generating a report on something from a spreadsheet? The Agent Company is a simulated office environment for benchmarking LLMs - I wrote a blog post about the paper here (with links and a rant): jilltxt.net/llms-fail-at...
LLMs fail at 70% of simple office tasks
Occasionally I love ChatGPT. Like when I gave it a research paper I’d written and the itinerary for my planned trip to Australia this November and asked it to look for related art exhibitions…

Now that I'm done with Trad Pub, here's all the query nonsense I wholly disregarded after my first query go-round.

Day 4: I didn't list my socials

Most agents ask for socials in their query tracker form. I have social media (obvi) and am trying to be more active since I'll be self-publishing soon.

One of my critique partners just finished a new book! That means it's almost beta reading time!

I'M SO HAPPY FOR ME!!!

Oh. And her. For finishing her book. Lot's of work, good job.

(This story is going to be so good y'all and soon it will be mine!)

My middle-grader made an impassioned (and I thought compelling) argument over breakfast this morning for why Celine should be considered nearly as bad a villain in KPop Demon Hunters as Gwi-Ma. Kid loves that movie but is *MAD* mad at that character.

Now that I'm done with Trad Pub, here's all the query nonsense I wholly disregarded after my first query go-round.

Day 3: I didn't personalize my query letters

I double-verified the agents I was soliciting rep'd my genre but I made no effort to individualize my pitch mostly because I did not care.

So here comes the trolley, barreling its way to the fork in the tracks. Yes, and here's the switch, and the people on the tracks; five of them in the trolley's current path, one on the alternate track. And then there's you, standing at the only switch.

I do not understand why so much online writing advice boils down to, "Do not use vast swaths of words."

Don't use $5 words
Don't use adverbs
Don't use anything other than said as a dialogue tag

Isn't the whole reason we do this because words are fun? Why would I restrict myself?
Writing advice I hate the most: Don't use five-dollar words

Every writer has their own favorites they love sneaking in, but never do.

Sometimes I'll spot one of my ❤️words in the wild, like when I saw @scalzi.com had casually dropped "martinet" into The End of All Things and it made my whole day.

My company is really trying to make fetch, I mean GenAI, happen. To say results are mixed is generous. I've started referring to it as Chet GPT.

Now that I'm done with Trad Pub, here's all the nonsense in their system I wholly disregarded after my first query go-round.

Day 2: I didn't read one of my comps.

I'm not good at comps. Asking me for recs or comps in any context immediately makes me forget every book I've ever read.

I, too, am giddy with the glad tidings that James Dobson is dead but, woof y'all. This is also a sobering reminder to endeavor to live my life in a such a way that the entire feed doesn't erupt into jubilant glee at the end of it.

You ever beta read a book and walk away upset that it's not for sale RIGHT NOW and generally incandescently angry at the state of Trad Pub?

Anywho and totally unrelated, this looks like a great book!
A 🧵 of my #PosterPit posts. Huge thanks for all the love today! My questionable graphic design skills and I were quaking at the thought of making *three whole posters,* but it turned out to be a lot of fun.
