Just released! Our prototype app that turns your smartwatch into a smartsensor for marine science.

If you love a little DIY, fork our open source code and test our app on your Apple Watch. github.com/rejectedbana...

Not that into DIY? Beta begins testing soon....

I'll be in L.A. in 2 weeks w @rejectedbanana.bsky.social! It'll be our first demo of the prototype app we're building for our startup. I ordered inflatable drink holders for this today- I think we're going to bring something a bit different than other folks : )

Tickets: luma.com/6886yksx
A graphic with the Tini Scientific logo on the left and a flame-y, galaxy-like red and purple design in the background. The text says "Come see us at IGNITE22, people | planet | galaxy. Powered by Braid Theory. L.A. Waterfront, October 7, 2025, IGNITE22.com"

I like how you put it on the oldest bottle :)

There’s still time to submit an abstract on ocean technology to #OSM26! Join @fishysounds.bsky.social and share how you’ve been hacking the ocean.

At Safeway this week, rainbows are “seasonal” and “tie dye”. Is the “tie die” deadly typo a secret code I should be worried about?
Image from the fresh floral shop on the Safeway flyer. On the left is a plant in a rainbow pot labeled “seasonal ceramic pack” and on the right is a rainbow colored rose titled “single stem tie die rose”

Swift even prints emojis in the output JSON! Not sure how dacs will handle the characters though
Snippet of JSON text with a key of "fileName" and a value of "Chicken emoji, jockey emoji"

Best part of building scientific software in Swift, you can use emojis as file names.

🐓🏇
Screen shot of iphone software that shows a logbook of scientific files. The list incudes the name, date and location of each file. The name of the first file are the chicken and jockey emojis. Second name, date and time, third name is boops boops

YES! That's the plan. You can share the data just like you would send a photo. Text your besties a JSON!

There's also a neat little map that also shows you where you took the data! I just don't want to show everyone where I live ha ha.

Brainstorming with @yuengdl.bsky.social on what fun educational experiments we can use a smartwatch for.

Here is a quick snippet of water temperature and IMU data I took this morning!
Screenshot from my phone that plots the temperature and pressure data, as well as acceleration and angular velocity from the sensors on my smartwatch.

This totally tubular robot doesn’t need a centralized processing system to hop around on land or swim in the water—it relies instead on air and simple physics. That and more of the best from @science.org and science in this edition of #ScienceAdviser: www.science.org/content/arti... 🧪

Also I have software that will output the data in real-time as a JSON from the Apple Watch Ultra (or any apple watch) if you want to be an alpha tester.
rejectedbanana.bsky.social
Yesish with the apple watch Ultra. Depends on whether you are close to wifi or cell service. I've been testing the GPS on my watch and there is a continuous dynamic correction. The best is within 10 feet, but sometimes it puts me on the other side of the street.

I also highly recommend getting scope of work in your inbox! Always some wormhole of random information to fall into.

Know anyone that needs a consultant to make those sensors work better? Because I am really good at that 🙃

YOUR FAVORITE WEATHER APP IS JUST A PRETTY DISPLAY OF NOAA DATA

Ppl seem to think that "NOAA weather forecasts" means climate-, boat-, or "in addition to my app"-weather. But the weather forecasts *we all use* are made from the NOAA data *we all paid for*

Make that part clear when you ⬇️

I’m thinking we should spread this news about the firings at NOAA as far and wide as possible. Like cancer research, weather forecasting seems likely to be broadly popular across the political spectrum. apnews.com/article/nati...

Federal workers who were not let go said the afternoon layoffs included meteorologists who do crucial local forecasts in National Weather Service offices across the U.S.

You are not alone! But you got this. Some of my most impactful work for the sciences was outside of academia.
