And that many early European settlers migrated to north America because they wanted to be able to practice their particular flavor of Christianity unhindered. (Didn't stop them from enforcing their belief system when they got here, of course.)

Yep. It's not just a matter of voting; someone has to make policy and write legislation. California has ballot propositions; they are a terrible way of making law. Direct democracy is a fine idea in principle, a mess in practice.
