Book #81. Terrific new bio of Franco. The 20th century’s“forgotten” dictator. Tremlett ably demonstrates that he was at least as bad as the rest.

I loved this.

Book #80. An excellent Croatian crime/missing person book. Largely set in Split, which I dug since I’ve actually visited.

The Louvre only managed to generate €8mn from fundraising last year. I’d be willing to bet there are DC-area private schools that bring in more.

For those wondering (there’s gotta be at least 1), I saw “Avatar 3” last night. Sure it’s flawed—How did that mommy Tulkun get those gigantic nose piercings? And yes, Jack Champion is dreadful.—but it’s a pretty fucking great ride. Those visuals…my god.

@ersatzverite.bsky.social You should be more cynical. There’s no downside.
why it's almost as if billionaires hired Bari Weiss to enflame cultural divides, disorient the public, and undermine journalism in a bid to divide and distract the electorate from the actual causes of most U.S. dysfunction

Two scenes: Ocean’s Eleven, and OUATIH. Just discovered these parallels this morning. Extremely tickled by this. A bit later in Ocean’s Eleven the Eliot Gould character also rails at “goddamn hippies.”

Tried reading Lea Ypi’s “Indignity.” Bailed pretty quickly. Her recreated world of her grandmother was terribly hokey.

This may be so but the idea that I’m going to spend 6 1/2 hours watching AVATAR 3 couldn’t be less of a non-starter.
FIRE AND ASH plays so much better on a second watch it’s almost a different movie; the messiness turns to coherence, the pacing smooths out, and arcs that felt a bit scattered (like Lo’ak’s) suddenly clarify. It’s as dense, rich and wild as any movie Cameron’s made. A major work.

Book #79. Third and final in a series about three generations of a French-Moroccan family in Morocco. Brilliant and absolutely beautiful.

Praying my name isn’t in this latest batch of Epstein docs.

@martindbbrown.bsky.social Got tickets for this. Not my favorite but never seen it on the big screen.

Isn’t this the same guy who dumped his wife to marry his student and has spent decades writing about moral decline?

Maybe I’m confusing him with someone else.
A month ago, NYT columnist David Brooks wrote a column decrying the media and political fixation on the Epstein story.

This afternoon, House Democrats released a new tranche of photos of an event that Brooks attended with Epstein.

Book #78 It’s not at all clear how Sands manages to write so eloquently and weave together so many different strands into these beautiful, captivating, horrifying narratives. But he does. Another brilliant book on historical memory and the apathy with which it’s often greeted.

Book #77. An unbelievably comprehensive examination of anything and everything relating to NYC from 1933-1945. Occasionally, reads like a laundry list of stuff but far more often is fascinating and engaging.
