Solid if nothing too new for the riot grrrl genre. Always nice to discover a new female-led punk band. While the storytelling here is fairly compelling, this project really struggles to balance the ballads with the bangers in a way that makes sense

Funky yet fantastical like a fairy tale. Weird even by both of these artists’ standards. A lot of it has yet to click, but I will get the complaint out of the way that not every song is a good showcase of their *collaborative* strength

Unsure how to feel. It’s missing a lot of the frenetic energy + constantly changing grooves and tempos I’ve come to expect. Feels very “lounge” and chill by comparison. It’s going to take some time for these synths to really sink in, I think.

Solid goth-y synthpop album with industrial beats. While generally charming, I feel like the vocals don’t do enough to match the level of energy of their inspirations, and very rarely change inflection across the various tracks to keep things fresh

These guys’re totally copying homework from Arcade Fire, and the lyrics are kind of paint-by-numbers. But the performances carry. The heart shines through. Hopefully a followup sees them work toward a stronger identity of their own!

Kind of a more soulful and glammy version of Different Class (though not as hooky). Listen if a man with a Yorkshire accent moaning about how famous he is for an hour sounds like a good time to you.
I’m not Jesus, though I have the same initials.

Decent noisy post-hardcore. Very rhythmic. A touch one-dimensional. Unwound are clearly still finding their feet here, knowing the heights they would reach on Leaves Turn Inside You
Favs are Nervous Energy, Valentine Card, Kantina, Pure Pain Sugar

Kinda disappointing tbh? A fair number of these are undeniable dance-pop classics, but the majority of this feels marred by cheap, dated production. Some of those early 2000s drum samples have aged like milk

First time hearing in full. You know exactly what the singles are, and basically every song on here has become a gay nightclub staple. As a front-to-back album experience I’m slightly more mixed, as I do think there is quite a dip in quality in the middle.

This rules. The sound feels fully formed despite being an early work. Savage is kind of an extended intro and is just ok, but the other 3 are really great. The Cleaner is possibly my fav of theirs now. As visceral as their studio albums. Wish it was longer

Madonna goes more theatrical and a little less to-the-point compared to her debut. The creative risk definitely pays off for the most part! I prefer a lot of the slower cuts on this one. But some of the hits here are obviously iconic.

Gloomy and brooding yet punchy when it counts, just how I like my goth music. Not as strong as the other album I’ve heard of theirs (the self-titled) but still great and worth a listen for anyone who likes The Cure. I prefer this band’s vocalist too

Impressive and ambitious even if not my favourite of his I’ve heard this far. I do appreciate this more ambient direction he took here though. You can tell a lot of this was meant to accompany a film, and I kinda prefer the vocal tracks here as a result

After getting into Cheekface I had to revisit a band they reminded me of. The Weens keep surprising me with how eclectic and off-the-wall they can be. This really is just something you have to jump into blind and see what genres they play with. Funnnn

This was okay. Def not as catchy as their previous album but the band is still decently enjoyable on a base level with their crisp, snappy vocals and consistently funny lyrics. Fav tracks are the first three and Changes in the Hardcore Scene

A mostly fun romp if you don’t think about its themes of sexual liberation too closely. Its idea of consent is rather dubious and the main brain behind it being a transphobe does not exactly make me want to be super charitable
