Yeah the fictional NHL commissioner in the sixth book more or less threatens Shane about publicly coming out! It's not a rosy picture and while none of the characters are so crass as to mention it, it's not surprising they come out only after years of salary and brand deals.

It's just a bad reading of the romance genre in general. There's a reason narratively that Shane is at his most expressive on and off the ice when it involves Ilya. Gosh almost like he's in love! Bland boy becomes bottom slut for one very particular person!

It's interesting because the stereotypes are kind of inverted here. An earlier generation of sci-fi had these stories in spades. Mostly how virile Men save effete degenerates by their masculine wiles. Now the self proclaimed alpha males are proudly incompetent and useless. Much gender!
