You can’t select a potion from the pause menu. Instead, you have to find it in a pinwheel menu while monsters are still hitting you. Why not give both options?

Right thumb stick to swing sword, aim, and select weapons. Switch HD version.

I’m currently at 900 and only hit the max that one time early on, which was short lived. So it’s actually pretty well done.

10 hours in now. This is one of the best and the worst Zelda games, at the same time. The dungeons—and puzzle design therein—are all impressive and some of the absolute greatest in the series. Whereas I continue to struggle with the controls, both with swinging and toggling between items.

Haha fair enough. Because of the power of the 80s, of course. But yeah, even if it was just the modern programs doing a 100 v 100 thing, with tons of vehicles and foot soldiers, I would have been pumped.

That final battle was just very meh.
January 15, 2026 at 4:43 PM
During the final battle, instead of just shutting down the enemies server remotely, they should have had a massive red v white battle in the digital world, cross cutting against the real world battle. And as the good programs are losing, Flynn sends in his blue 80s army.

Missed opportunity.

Void for now. Let’s see where it goes.

* The dowsing feature feels unnecessary. Haven’t used it yet in the two scenarios and was fine.
* Bowling bombs is kind of rough
* Link’s cry when jumping in lava is the best
* I keep attacking bugs when I mean to use the net :(

I’ve found a bunch of cubes that I’ve freed and 3 chests that I can’t open. Are these connected? Discovering chests and having to go back to them kind of…sucks.

I typed up my first 5 hour thoughts: bsky.app/profile/retr...
Zelda: Skyward Sword HD

My impressions of the first 5 hours are in this thread.

First, a stylistic compliment: This is my favorite Link outfit. The baggy pants tucked into the boots is a cool look. And the starting outfit is fun too.

The concept of the sky land is intriguing. I like it!

Ok, that’s it for now.

In summary, it’s better than I expected. Controls still feel a bit awkward yet unique. Dungeon design was great.

More to come.

Maxing out your money in the first few hours — in any game — is a bummer, and it happened to me here. But this is a minor gripe, as I quickly spent it all with more to come back for after my first revisit to my home town.
January 13, 2026 at 11:06 PM
The home town has some good and bad. There’s some light quests and market place purchases to make, with reasons to revisit. Exploration isn’t well rewarded, which is a missed opportunity. Checking in items is tedious. I’m left curious to see how far the crafting system will go, which is interesting.
January 13, 2026 at 11:06 PM
The first dungeon has an impressive design. I found myself scratching my head a few times and really having to absorb the environment and test things out. As such, it’s rewarding. It feels fairly unique, including the boss battle. In short, it’s well crafted.
January 13, 2026 at 11:06 PM
This isn’t very open world. Granted, I didn’t expect anything like BotW. Though it does feel a little more restricted than games prior, such as Wind Waker. I’m not very far so I don’t know how I feel about the “zones” yet. For its age, a non-seamless transition between flight spaces is acceptable.
January 13, 2026 at 11:06 PM
The controls are unusual. They take quite a bit of getting used to, especially after countless hours of BotW and TotK. The sword mechanic in the form of a flick opens up interesting design opportunities for puzzles and combat alike. It also makes battles feel harder. (I have mixed feelings there.)
January 13, 2026 at 11:06 PM
This being a gap in my Zelda experience, it’s been eye opening to see what prior games influenced it as well as what Skyward invented for the series. The latter of which would go on to blossom in Breath of the Wild. In short, it’s a strong link in the chain (pun intended).
