They mentioned that in these regions, people don't always think in terms of boundaries, but that they locate things through the events that happen to them. This led us to consider illustrated maps, where the geographic markers are the events that shape their realities.

Design intent: During early conversations with the client, we tried to gain an understanding of the on-ground reality faced by forcefully displaced people in in Somalia, Ethiopia, South Sudan, and Uganda.

For these stories, we created illustrated maps for each country, showcasing the challenges faced by displaced communities.

Last year, we published a set of stories about the living conditions of forcibly displaced people in Somalia, Ethiopia, South Sudan, and Uganda in collaboration with UNHCR and the Joint Data Center on Forced Displacement (more on this soon).

Finally, we arrived at this layout–cards stacked horizontally, the height of which depended on the level of the value, showing gradual decline as we reached the bottom level while still maintaining interaction and readability.
January 23, 2026 at 12:25 PM
We tried several formats. The first was a pyramid structure that worked as a concept but not logistically for the web. The second was a flat card structure, that worked well for interactions, but lost the hierarchy of the values.
January 23, 2026 at 12:25 PM
The challenge lied in making this interactive, keeping all values highly readable and interactive, and well-suited for the format (across devices), while still maintaining the hierarchy of the values.
January 23, 2026 at 12:25 PM
The task was to find a way to showcase all values, while maintaining the multi-level categorisation–core value, company level values, team level, individual level, and lastly a concluding set of notes on how the company does business.
