Nature targets aren’t optional – they’re the law ⚖️

The latest report from the Office of Environmental Protection (OEP) shows the Government is nowhere near meeting its legal commitments to nature. With nature in freefall and targets like 30by30 looming, action is urgently needed.

We are delighted to be awarding £15,000 from our Rewilding Innovation Fund to Celtic Rewilding to explore the possibility of bringing back three ‘missing’ amphibian species to the Norfolk landscape.

🐿️ Results from rewilding charity @treesforlife.bsky.social’s 10-year red squirrel reintroduction programme revealed that the species has reclaimed former territories in the north and north-west Highlands and that their range across the Scottish Highlands has expanded by more than a quarter.

🦪 Wilder Humber and Oyster Heaven are making strides for oyster restoration off the east coast of England. The former has placed 250,000 oysters in the Humber Estuary, while the latter is set to create Europe’s largest oyster reef off the Norfolk coast.

🪺 White storks will be making a historic comeback in east London next year thanks to funding from mayor Sadiq Khan. Plans are for captive-bred birds to be introduced to an aviary in Eastbrookend where they’ll raise chicks that will eventually be released to establish a wild population.

A few months ago, a small group from the Rewilding Network headed to Cefn Garthenor 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

This was our first Network visit to Wales and it couldn’t have been more exciting. The group got the chance to explore the beaver enclosure at Cefn, which is one of the first in Wales.

Kingsdale Head are restoring damaged peatland on their 607-hectare former sheep farm, supported by our Rewilding Innovation Fund 🌱

The Fund has helped Kingsdale to grow and transplant native sphagnum mosses which drive a lot of the processes on blanket bogs, including peat formations.

Study shows wildcats could return to Devon 🐾
A two-year study by the South West Wildcat Project has found that reintroducing wildcats to mid-Devon is feasible — and that most local people support the idea. It envisages 40-50 animals being released, though not before 2027.

Glen Affric has joined the Affric Highlands partnership, adding over 17,600 ha to Britain’s largest rewilding landscape. The move expands a 200,000-ha restoration effort led by Rewilding Affric Highlands.

Since Rewilding Britain was formed in 2015, rewilding has moved from being a niche idea to offering real hope in the face of some of the biggest global challenges we face.
