I think this underestimates how quickly popular anti-Americanism can surface again
Key dilemma for European policy makers. They must explain to their electorates why the US is now an enemy. But they must do so without provoking its narcissist president.
It may also be part of how we operate that we lie and manipulate the US government. I've no doubt that repeatedly giving speeches pointing out that they are our enemy may not be particularly effective, but that doesn't negate that that is what they are.
