I write stuff (i Paper, Empire, Sight & Sound, Guardian, Line of Best Fit, Indicator Blu-ray). I like old movies, old books, old buildings and new music. Rep’d by The North Lit Agency.
RIP Udo Kier, you are doing something weird and amusingly offputting in Heaven now.

Being reintegrated into society after one of my lockdowns. Went to see my old nu-folk fave, Ruth Notman, at Green Note. An utterly lovely time.

I did drop him a line back when he posted this, with, “Didn’t you report me to my employer for being sarcastic to you online” but he was too busy to confirm either way

I don’t believe so. Apparently Tag Gallagher has a nicer print, but only released on DVD:

Perhaps the Frenchest thing I’ve ever seen, from the adultery set-up to the bobbed hair to the understated FIN. Whack it in a triple bill with 7th Heaven (1927) and Big City (1937) of films where taxi drivers flock to the rescue, to the detriment of the film. Starts well, runs out of steam. Bof.

The only reason to watch this is if you’re going to die in 108 minutes’ time

Kalifornia (1993). Full of interesting ideas: principally true crime & transgressive art meeting the reality… tho since that reality is also highly stylised here, it doesn’t quite work. Beautifully shot, though, & at times very well acted. Pitt is pretty good, Forbes memorable, and Lewis spectacular
