Yes, true enough. The celebration of the left’s violence in the ‘30s (much as I would love it to have been right) overlooks the fact that it was what he wanted and often counterproductive. By 1951, of course, hitting him in the face with a brick had no downside and was to be entirely encouraged.

The story is more complicated than we tend to paint it: Mosley provoked street battles with the left (including the Battle of Cable Street) as a conscious recruiting strategy *and it worked*.

Having said that, I am glad that he was hit in the face with a brick.

Ah, happy 88th anniversary of the day Oswald Mosley tried to sell fascism to Liverpudlians – and someone concussed him with a brick
A man in a suit stands at a microphone which has been mounted on the roof of a van. There are loudspeakers at his feet, and a building behind him. He has an arm raised, and is flinching as projectiles are hurled at him, because he's a fucking Nazi

Today marks the start of Baby Loss Awareness Week.

This year, it comes as the UK is about to pass a law guaranteeing the right to bereavement leave for miscarriage, making us one of only 4 countries in the world to offer it.

My heart is with everyone who experiences the heartbreak of baby loss.

Joan Fontaine + @pamhutch.bsky.social! The dream! Always enjoy Phil's essays too (and of course the entirely convincing father-and-son duo of Edward G. Robinson and his enormous, athletic blonde son). Lovely work as always.

We need a Susie Dent ruling on this. Until then I’m just assuming it’s another word Americans can’t pronounce.

Here’s a primer on ‘primer.’

It’s pronounced ‘PRIMM-er’ if you mean “a small book” or “a short informative piece of writing.”

It’s pronounced ‘PRY-mer’ if you mean “an initial coat of paint.”

I’m quite good at guessing the exact time when it’s been a few hours since anyone checked

Delighted both that Dolly is OK, and that young culture journalists have to keep mentioning the forgotten 1930s character actor, Jean Hersholt.
Parton did not elaborate or specify on the “health challenges” that also forced her to withdraw from November’s Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Governors Awards, where she was set to receive the Jean Hersholt humanitarian award. But she made clear that she was undergoing medical treatments near her home in Nashville.

No, absolutely not. Poorly phrased by me – hard, but essential, to see it on its own terms.

I feel like it’s good in itself and would have been an interesting stand-alone, but the slasher craze it inspired was almost entirely negative, regressive and moribund. Similar to Tarantino’s first two in that respect, only more so.

I remember reading the pieces at the time and thinking, “What the fucking hell is this, who cares about Glitter’s rights this much?!” Makes more sense now

Happy Hearts of Fire day to those who celebrate! I talked to Beau Hill, Music Director of the movie and producer of the soundtrack, about months of chaos working on Bob Dylan's infamous flop

And I got an answer to the question we've all been asking: How much did Bob really know about Ratt?
