Someone should just ask whether he would send the guard to Illinois if they were assisting with a flood, or landslide or something.

Nobody in the blue states asked for your “help,” Greg.
Tweet from Greg Abbott showing members of the Texas National Guard boarding a large military cargo plane on a runway at sunrise. Text reads:
“The elite Texas National Guard.
Ever ready.
Deploying now.”

Yo Economist your ownership is showing.

Economists are aware of the problems that wealth taxes face. A growing number support their reintroduction regardless. That is a mistake
Don’t tax wealth
Even the most sophisticated arguments in favour of doing so make no sense

The constitution is kinda garbage, it's true. But designing an effective system is not impossible! It could probably even be done through amendments. Probably. Maybe.

If you have a 70, 80% majority, sure. But with the numbers these guys have? Change those two things and they'd be in an impossible position. They'd not have the house; they'd not have the courts.

This is so fatalistic. A ban on gerrymandering, and a reformed Supreme Court more impervious to packing and a lot of what's happening would be impossible.

TBH there is no way to design any system to counteract an executive declaring "I have all power and can exercise it arbitrarily" when a majority of the legislative and judicial branches responds with "that's right." Such a society is too primitive for modern governance and the rule of law.

Again, this is what I mean when I say the Constitution is broken

Which of the institutions it establishes, exactly, ISN'T broken?? Which is acting to maintain the constitutional order?

How bout this?

I bet Just like Heaven happened the day before How Beautiful You Are. Real emotional rollercoaster of a weekend for 1987 Robert.

There is no world in which it is normal for the president to publicly call upon his attorney general to hurry up and prosecute his political foes. It’s like the Watergate tapes but posted on social media. Let’s get a grip on what’s happening here.

It's also just... logistically facile. They won't get past the primary. So what is actually recommending. Useless.

Oh interesting. I've not watched any of them.

Definitely part of the horror of all this is how utterly blah the "joke" was.

Ezra and Nate cannot handle their diminishing influence. It's fine, men. Go gently into the night. Take up a hobby. Home improvement or brewing or cars. Move to the sticks. You'll feel better. I promise.

But it also doesn't feel like the center is holding.
I'm not sure whether it's Bluesky or something else, but the progressive epistemic bubble is getting really bad.
So where was Kimmel getting this from? Well, maybe from Bluesky. Or (gulp) maybe from Substack. As Gabe Flesher pointed out, Heather Cox Richardson, the author of the #1 U.S. politics newsletter Letters from an American, wrote this weekend that Robinson "appears to have embraced the far right, disliking Kirk for being insufficiently radical." Richardson presented no evidence for this; it's wishful thinking at best. But really, it's just a falsehood; like Flesher, I'll be polite and not use the term
"lie" just because I don't know what's in Richardson's head. *
I'm not looking to pick a fight with Richardson (I know some of you subscribe to her) or Kimmel. But the progressive epistemic bubble is getting really bad. Maybe not worse than the MAGA bubble - but bad, and progressives often rationalize bad behavior by saying whatever the other side is doing is worse. This has already had serious consequences, such as denialism about Joe Biden's deteriorating condition last year, which they blamed on unfair media coverage. Kimmel is a relatively mainstream figure, so if this sort of misinformation about Robinson is making its way to him - and in scripted remarks, not off-the-cuff comments like Dowd's - that suggests the bubble is expanding, slowly devouring the reality-based community, and that formerly rational commentators have trouble escaping it once they're past the event horizon.

NIN's Tron Ares soundtrack way better than it has any right to be. The balance between their score work and NIN rock tracks w/vocals is awesome.
