On the Dutch island of Terschelling, near the village of Midsland, stands a lonely artificial hill. It has contained a church since at least the 9th century. The church is gone, but the ancient cemetery remains.

Looking up at one of the tower-like stairwells of James Miller's ealy 1900s Glasgow Royal Infirmary buildings, I was struck by how similar they are to the lighthouses designed by Robert Stevenson almost a century earlier.

The rather beautiful Drymen Parish Church to the north of Glasgow. The central section was built in the 1770s, while the porch on the left and the stair tower on the right were added in the late 19th Century.
