The marker reads: In Honor of Pere Jacques Marquette and Louis Jolliet The first white men to pass through the Chicago River September 1673 This tablet is placed by the Illinois Society of the Colonial Dames of America under the auspices of the Chicago Historical Society, 1925 Marquette historic marker in Portage, Wisconsin, near the Fox River. It reads: On June 14, 1673 Jacques Marquette and Louis Jolliet started the portage (1.28 miles) from here to the Wisconsin River, which led to their discovery of the Upper Mississippi June 17, 1673 at Prairie du Chien. The expedition, in two birch bark canoes, traveled south to the mouth of the Arkansas River and returned to St. Ignace, a trip of nearly 3000 miles. Thus a new era of exploration, settlement and commerce began for the Great Lakes region, the Mississippi Valley and the Far West. Stabilization of the fur trade followed and also the organization of numerous Indian tribes under French rule. Marquette, a talented Jesuit missionary, dedicated his life and energy ministering to the Indians. Born June 1, 1637 in Laon, France, he died near Ludington, Michigan May 18, 1675. It reads: Jacques Marquette During the seventeenth century, dedicated Jesuit missionaries forged into the North American wilderness to live and work among the native peoples of the Great Lakes region. In September 1666, at age twenty-nine, Father Jacques Marquette arrived in Quebec. He then helped establish a mission in Sault Ste. Marie, worked at the Mission of Ste. Esprit in the Chequamegon Bay area, and founded a mission in St. Ignace. In 1673 Marquette and Louis Jolliet explored the Mississippi River as far south as the Arkansas River. Two years later Marquette fulfilled his promise to return to the Illinois people. Illness cut short his ministry and on May 18, 1675, he died while returning to St. Ignace. In 1677 Odawa Indians returned his remains to St. Ignace for burial beneath the floor of his mission. Erected 2000 by Michigan Historical Center, Michigan Department of State. Historical marker at the Chicago Portage National Historic Site in Forest View, Illinois. It reads: The Chicago Portage Here you stand at the west end of a 7.5 mile long water and overland travel route across a continental divide between the St. Lawrence and Mississippi River systems, known as the Chicago Portage. Well-known to Native Americans, the route was first visited by Europeans more than 300 years ago. It became a major gateway for exploration and pioneer expansion to the west and for the fur trade in both directions. This remaining protected portion of the Chicago Portage route is little changed from the time Fr. Jacques Marquette, Louis Jolliet, Sieur de LaSalle, Henri de Tonty, Antoine Ouilmette, Jean Baptiste Point du Sable, Antoine Beaubien, John Crafts, John Kinzie, Gurdon S. Hubbard, and numerous missionaries, soldiers, pioneers, voyageurs and traders passed through here. In 1821, the original portage route was mapped by John Walls. In 1848, the Illinois and Michigan Canal was built along this route. In 1907, the Sanitary and Shipping Canal was built and remains in use today. This land was purchased from the Chicago Sanitary District on August 3, 1950, and is now owned and protected by the Forest Preserve District of Cook County. The Chicago Portage was officially designated a National Historic Site in non-Federal ownership by the Department of the Interior on January 3, 1952. It is one of only two National Historic Sites in the State of Illinois. Erected 2009 by The Forest Preserve District of Cook County, the Illinois and Michigan Canal National Heritage Corridor Civil Center Authority, and The Illinois State Historical Society.
